04/2010 - Its Hot In These Streets (A Warning Please Read)
2 nights ago a chica put me down on 3 Haitian guys that were going to come see me....... Here is how it went down.
I was hanging out with HoseMan and another longtime board member. Hose and I went to Classico and posted up in front of the bar. HoseMan left with an amiga and I began to talk with a Dominican guy that lived close to me in the US.........before he was deported. The guy is a general suit case pimp, translates for guys, introduces guys to chicas, but he is never pushy, and I never see him begging for drinks.
A little short chica I have never seen before walks up to me and starts talking. After a few minuets she gets real philosophical about life, people, and the world. I sort of put all this out of my mind, I figured she just hit some really good shit, and it is expanding her mind into the outer reaches of the universe.
She then tells me, "You should go with your friend now". I ask why and she says, "for nothing". Then tells me "What ever you are going to do tonight you should do it now". I ask why again, and she says "for nothing". A few seconds later she tells me again, "Leave with your friend", "It is best to go with him now". Then I asked, "Is there a problem?". There were plenty of people out, it was well lit, in front of a place with security and Politur around....... but now she has my RADAR on.
She tells me, "It is dangerous in the street", "it is dangerous right now". After she said this I did not respond, but in a flash after she said "dangerous" all of that philosophical garbage about people and life all made sense.
I looked up (she is very short) and directly across from me, looking me directly in my face, Haitian Chulo #1. I look to my far right, looking me directly in my face, Haitian Chulo #2. I look across the street in front of X Flow, and yep.......looking me directly in my face, Haitian Chulo #3. All of them had a predatory look in their eyes and they were probing me for any sign of weakness.
All three hang together during the day, ( I make it a point to know the chulos and their girls) and run their girls from the Haitian Embassy, and the bar in front of Latinos by night.
I go from Mackish mode to my predator mode, and make sure they see me size them up one by one. BUT I am not stupid, I casually look around and the Politur have gone down to the casino and I remember the PN SWAT guys have "arrested" a beautiful puta for walking on the sidewalk and taken her to the station. I still have a crowded street to my advantage, BUT my car is parked toward the casino.......a walk down a dark street.
An opportunity presents itself when motos and cars pass and clog the street, so I cross the street in front of X Flow, as I do this Haitian Chulo #3 crosses the street. I see him but his view of me is obscured. I stand at the entrance to the club and wait while talking to the security guys. After a while 5 or 6 Politur arrive and I casually leave for my car. A pleasant end to something that could have gone bad. I was not drinking that night and not a soft target, they just marked me for whatever reason.
In the past month I have seen 3 guys get fucked up, not counting what happened to Trini. It is no more dangerous here than any other place, but when you place very poor people around people with even a small amount of disposable income.......you know what happens.
And on a final note, no I am not paranoid.
Re: Its Hot In These Streets (A Warning Please Read)
I still don't get.
Why would have eyed you specifically as a target. And what time of night was it?

I am so glad that the first thing you said was you are happy I am safe and did not get robbed!!!!!!!!!!
Whats not to get, three criminals want to rob a guy. Pretty simple. They rob each other, so whats not to get about robbing a foreigner.
Between 3 and 4 in the morning.
Re: Its Hot In These Streets (A Warning Please Read)
Its really bad and people are suffering ergo the increase in crime. Its the natural order of things.
If the government doesn't do something to help the people they will riot.

Our recession is becoming their depression.
Re: Its Hot In These Streets (A Warning Please Read)
Truth to be told I have never been "en la calle" after 2 am. I drove by, however, one time at 3:30 am after dropping off a friend at Caribe Tours for her return trip to Haiti.
Even without getting out of the car, it wasn't a pretty picture at that time of night. Mostly scum and low-life; this observation is, of course, further corraborated by your account. Glad that you are ok!

That was very scary, or you're a damn fine writer (I was really feeling it)! Either way, I'm glad you're ok. What do you think made you the target vs the other gringos? Was it the car? They could've seen you pull up. You said you saw them earlier...could they have been casing you out then? Was the chica who warned you Haitian or Dominican? My mind is wandering...I'm usually solo. I'm big on common sense, but sometimes that's not enough!

It does seem a little dicey when the bars start closing up at those hours, but Damnn , 3 guys ? those are bad odds u dont want to deal with . Im glad you are ok Corrado.

Its different this time. Its a bad recession so families are not going away and large hotels are closing down.
Maybe the government can steal less?

You make it sound like you were the sole focus of their attention which would make it seem like more than just a random opportunity to rob somebody.
You were not in a vulnerable state which makes it all the more suspicious that there is more to their motive of specifically targeting you.
In any case, it's good that you had your wits working and got away okay.

Whether it was referring to the US or DR...let's show some revolutionary spirit!

Thanks, I am a writer also. The chica was Dominican, the suitcase pimp I was talking to introduces guys to her, I had just never seen her before that night. I have an idea about the why, but it is not something I can put on the board, but it revolves around the original concept...... foreigner with disposable income

I hate to make it seem like this is a bad place (it is not) but civil disobedience is not uncommon here, maybe a year ago, the truck drivers blocked the road to Puerto Plata around Monte Llano, and something similar happened in Naverete perhaps a year and a half ago.

Oh no not random at all, and robbery is not the only thing going on, Haitian Criminals kidnap like Dominicans play baseball.

Perhaps the most famous man in the world, that very few actually know about.
Re: Its Hot In These Streets (A Warning Please Read)
I am not quite sure how this works, re: "most famous, very few [...] know about".
Suffice it to say that he is remembered by many as a revolutionary at the forefront of fighting US imperialism in Latin-America.

Thanks for the heads up. :iconTU:
What happened to Trini ????? and can you elaborate on the 3 guys you seen get fucked up. Were they robberies, bar fights ??
Knowing the circumstances could give a guys radar a frame of reference.
Re: Its Hot In These Streets (A Warning Please Read)
Glad you came out OK.
You need to buy the chica a drink for looking out. You should also throw one of them Haitians a beating if you know who they are.
Re: Its Hot In These Streets (A Warning Please Read)
I'm missing this place less and less everyday.
Just glad everything ended well for Corrado.
