To go back to the original question of the thread. If I was there in official capacity of the US Govt, Hell yeah I would make friends with local cops. These are some of the best folks for local intel. However without the backing of the US govt, hell no. Less interaction is better. Give them respect and stay out their way.
Being in prison doesn't count as being from there.

My final say on this:
I know various people in law enforcement in the DR, but I know them because they are part of my family or clan there...
Otherwise you'll never know what you get from these kind of relationships... I still remember that guy that used to come down for a few frio's to the Palace (loooked like a Hippo)... he must have gotten money from john as a pay-off

Re: Socializing with the Policia in the DR? Good or bad?
Most of the longer term expats that I've met, and that's a lot, especially the business owners have various contacts in the different branches of the Polica; AMET and PN as well as the military from Generals down to street level Army, AMET and Politur guys.
It costs nothing to meet them, it happens naturally over time through circumstance and referrals of friends, etc...and costs very little to show a little appreciation especially at New Years and perhaps other occasions.
You never know when it will be to your benefit and if, as has been suggested, you are careful and use some common sense they will not have opportunity to be able to case the inside of your house or gain the upper hand. You vet them, only deal with known, reliable and recommended people and meet them at their home or on neutral ground.
You have little to lose and much to gain...or you can be the Lone Ranger if you prefer.

Well it certainly came in handy in your case.

Feel better now Martin? I gave you more credit than that.

That is kinda the way I look at it. Hopefully that will be the case.

It's pretty tried and true. If, as C-Mike suggested, you had "family" in the DR obviously that would be the way to go. Unfortunately for most of us that is not really an option. However you can substitute solid referrals from well connected friends, for family, and if careful still succeed.
I think the key is to take the time to let it occur naturally and not try and seek it out or force it. You can "be in the right place at the right time" though...;)
You seem to be going about it sensibly from what I can see.

That is the key issue. Apos is suggesting you do not admit them to your home. That is the issue I was querying in my OP.

When it comes down to it I don't have anything worth stealing except a TV and a laptop. There must be better targets out there.

Robert, a TV and a laptop makes you a prime target. Don't kid yourself for one second.
One of these days, you're going to come home, see a broken door latch, and when you get inside and take inventory, you'll be dumbfounded at what's been taken. Seriously.
As far as buying stuff for cops I know at Christmas time... that would bankrupt me!!

People have been killed for cellphones here. Several times!
(No, Robert, I don't mean the same person has been killed several times for his/her cellphone).

Well of course it does. Along with just about every other gringo in the country. Show of hands how many ex-pats on here do NOT have a TV and a computer. I would think that any self-respecting thief here would assume every gringo has those without having to actually see them. My point was I have nothing more than those things.
Re: Socializing with the Policia in the DR? Good or bad?
Robert,
You know you're on the right path, for you. Don't over-think it or get steered away from what is right for you.
