01/2015- Cellular phones, rates, best practices, feeding chica fons, land-lines, etc.
Many communications questions for the DR experts [much appreciated in advance]:
1. What are the different options for having cellulars in the DR? [companies]
2. What are best rates/deals from which companies?
3. Is it better to bring an old phone and have them unlock it, or buy in the DR, for my use?
4. What is best way and cost of getting a fon to a broke chica, used or new? how?
5. What are best practices for refilling chica fons?
6. There must be a cost/benefit point at which putting in a landline to a special chica makes sense. What are landline install and monthly costs?
7. Which VOIP works best for the DR and to the DR?

They will never be down with that because they will never be home to answer it.

Re: 01/2015- Cellular phones, rates, best practices, feeding chica fons, land-lines,
Just a quick question-I am pretty sure my Claro I have had for years has died because I did not register it last year when they were making people re-register. Is it fairly easy to walk into a Claro or Orange store and get a SIM. I'll be in BC

None of those three questions make any sense. Why would you want to do that? Thinking of falling in love?:rofl::rofl:
Lots of girls have Whatsapp and viber on their phones. Some even still have (heaven forbid) BBM!! Two of my bj girls still use BBM.

Claro, because of the data plan it has with prepaid sims. No contract, 500mb for rd450/ 30 days. Great for all your internet and app requirements.
How do chicas prefer to communicate? voice or text?
Text, because they usually don't understand my Spanish. On the other hand, one needs to find something else other then Google translate to understand their text writing:rolleyes:
See above

lol.......island cell phone 101........area mi got a lot of expertise in......lol.......on dat other isand.........the J island......lol...generally it's the same across the Caribbean.....
gurls want touchscreen phones.......so forget about trying to throw a Blackberry type at dem.......
normally they want the Samsung Galaxy's and iPhones from the tourist......mi call dem "gift phones"........dangerous territory to get involved in......
blame the idiots before you for giving gurls a $500 phone for banging her a couple times.......lol
you need GSM sim card cellies..........not CDMA phones.........google the model and it will pull up the specs on any model cellie
you can try giving the LG's, HTC's, Pantech's and Huawei phones a try.....those are ones mi would recommend.....well built and they last
good brands and easy ones to unlock(before you reach) are HTC, Pantech, LG's and Huawei's.........probably in that order........Huawei is the worst built phone
stay away from the Chinese stuff.........some are great..........some are just paperweights.......it's just takes a lot of research to figure the Chinese phones......
you can get the unlock codes on Ebay for pretty cheap money........you just enter the digits and presto the phone is unlocked........
you want phones that are in excellent condition........not sumthin that hasn't had a case on it.......or sumthin that has been used for years........
never give a gurl a phone beforehand..........cut the deal with her and give it to her when you are done with her..........
buying $100 cellie off of Ebay and then giving it to a gurl for one night wouldn't make sense.....but giving one after 3 or 4 nights would.......
and figure on giving ther gurl taxi fare on top of the cellie.......they usually can live with that........no money at all would be ruff on da gurl........
personally mi have given mi favorites $40 unlocked cellies($100 phone in der eyes) and cases plus taxi fare for a week with mi.......but mi live der half the time and know the runnings....
though tits lived with mi for a Winter and never really got any money from mi....just a Blackberry 9800 touchscreen slider.......and a lot of food and sex.......ha ha
pic of tits........

Re: 01/2015- Cellular phones, rates, best practices, feeding chica fons, land-lines,
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS:
It is REAL easy to screw up on getting a phone for the DR.
You can get a decent one for about 35 bucks delivered on eBay.
I also found new ones for 55.
SeaWeed made many good suggestions:
1. GMS networks only.
2. Best: HTC, Pantech, LG's and Huawei's...probably in that order.
Here is where you can really screw up:
O/S?
I focused on Android.
Go to the Google Play page and find the apps you will want to use.
These should include Whatsapp, and maybe FB, viber, skype.
What is the minimum Android version that will run all the apps you want?
I settled on 2.3 as a minimum.
Most cheaper phones are the earlier versions of Android.
Networks?
There will be many listings that say GSM or "works everywhere".
Not always true.
Here are the facts on which carrier uses which band in the DR:
Orange UMTS 900; GSM/GPRS 900/1900
Claro UMTS 850; GSM/GPRS 850/1900
I found some phones that only had 850/1900
And others that had NO 2G bands at all and the title said GSM.
DR Specs found here: http://www.att.com/travelguide/cover...L=214&MNC=CING
SIM form factor?
It is almost impossible to find what type of SIM card the phone uses on listings.
There are currently three main sizes:
Mini [often called standard], Micro, and Nano.
I wanted to swap easily between phones.
My other phones use mini FF SIM.
So I only looked at those.
Yes there are adapters available, but read the reviews and find that they screw up phones.
Most DR phones use the Mini [often called standard] FF.
Use this site to find the form factor used on the phone you are looking at.
http://www.gsmarena.com/
Internal memory?
Most apps use more memory than their earlier versions did.
I would suggest at least 2G.
Some listings try to confuse you and say "can do up to 32G".
That is extra memory possible - will not help you run your apps.
That is just for file storage.
Internal memory sometimes is broken down into two types: RAM and ROM.
Use this site to find the internal memory specs on the phone you are looking at.
http://www.gsmarena.com/
Charger?
Many listings do not include the charger.
If it is not mentioned, it is not included.
If not, then add another 15 bucks.
Unlocked?
It MUST be unlocked.
It is best if it is unlocked before you go to the DR.
Unlocking in the DR costs about 11 bucks.
If it is a used phone, you can likely get the free unlock code from the carrier.
I did this with an ATT phone.
ATT has a special webpage to request the unlock code.
If the contract was paid up and finished, or was a prepaid phone, they will give free unlocks.
att.com/deviceunlock
You need a SIM chip from some other carrier to do the unlock.
OR use a friend's chip from another carrier.
OR take it to some tech repair place.
OR buy the other chip from seller on ebay for a couple bucks.
Is it stolen?
If it is, you won't be able to turn it on.
Find the IMEI number.
Some sellers will show it or give it to you.
and check these sites.
http://swappa.com/esn
http://checkesnfree.com/
OR buy from one of the "stores" on eBay that are selling many phones each day.
They are obvious - they have thousands of transactions.

.
if you google the model of the phone and ask for the specs.........
gmsarena or phonearena or phonescoop will have the specs and the network that the phones uses......
basically you want a "quad phone" which is 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 networks
if the phone only has say 850 and 1900 you are limited which carrier or sim you can use in the DR.....

you can buy new chargers off of Ebay for under $5 delivered.......most phones today use the universal mini usb .....gone are the days with dozens of different chargers
Unlocking or Locked phones is an area you need to be real careful about......mi do these every week and even mi get fooled......
sometimes a listing on Ebay will say UNLOCKED......but it only means it's not password or patterned locked......so be careful......
you pay a premium for unlock phones on Ebay.......cause you can use them on just about any carrier so they are more desirable.......
again Nokia, Samsung, Iphones and a few others are $30 or more for the unlock code.......
the least expensive codes are for GSM HTC, Pantech and Huawei......mi use to pay $7.50 for a Huawei unlock code but dem down to $2 on Ebay
LG's codes are now $4.50 on Ebay after being only $1.50 for years and years.....ugh

this is something mi close attention to these days since mi buying the Chinese phones.......
when you see 256MB or 512MB for internal memory on the specs......those are really poor phones for apps.....and that's if you can add any apps to the phone.....
basically look for 1GB or more for internal memory......not the SD memory stuff......and you will be in pretty good shape......
most decent brands have good enuff internal memory to run apps.......but watch out for the Chinese or cheapies that don't........
a great Summary by OP and many thanks....wish someone would have put this up a couple years ago as it would have saved mi a ton of hours of research......

this should be for all countries not just DR. I look back at it now and I like the questions and format also. I get my phones on ebay and amazon, places like that. All unlocked. The internal memory is definitely a big deal. To me personally though I really need a physical keyboard on the phone but they stopped making them after this LG phone im looking for now :(
Ting Tong spent like 1000 pesos or more on load. I was telling him if you do a promo you get access for a whole week or even more for much less, plus you never have to worry about your load running out since you would be on a promo. Only in the middle of the week of his last week (1 month trip) did he get hooked up to a promo for less than 100 pesos going to run him the whole week. A good phone is a valuable monger asset on a trip. I really like the dual sim international though just because you can have 2 sims! though I guess 2 phones works equally as effective.

it actually stinks.......having one phone is way better in many ways.....carrying 2 phones last Summer was such a pain in the ass......
worried about loosing one or it being tief.......or having one fall out of the pocket......
or having two phones ringing at the same time.......or talking on one phone and the other one rings......then the gurl on the phone asking u who is calling you.....ha ha
so I had Runmemphis bring down a dual sim phone for mi since he was heading down anyways.......huge difference when I got to use that dual sim baby.....pussy saver

Re: 01/2015- Cellular phones, rates, best practices, feeding chica fons, land-lines,
Another option you may consider is the T-Mobile Simple Choice Plan (this is their regular post paid plan). Its a cheap plan to begin with so I switched to T-Mobile as my main carrier here in the US.
Internet roaming and Texting in DR is free, calls are .2(~9 pesos) a minute(within DR), this is all included with your basic Simple Choice Plan, you dont need to add this feature. The internet is not that fast but good enough for GPS/Whatsapp. I believe there is an option to upgrade to faster internet.
If you want to call your girl from the US you can add the $10 Tmobile Longdistance plan. Free calls to all landlines, .2 per minute to cell phones(might be a $15 option for free cell phone calls), free texting.

the thing mi didn't like about Tmobile versus Simple Mobile.......is that Tmobile shuts off your wifi hotspot when you hit 5GB........
the phone data and everything else still works......but the wifi hotspot won't......with Simple Mobile the wifi will tick down to 2G but doesn't cut you off completely like Tmobile
