An area one should avoid late at night
This is an area where a lot of streetwalkers hang out. I do not recommend this place late at night.
The streetwalkers (especially in this area) are known to take more than just your money.

That corner is right around the black from remington palace. . . .down the block from de noche. I wonder what is up with de noche these days. . ..since nobody ever went there before 2-3 am, and now with the curfew. . . . . .
There is a bar at this intersection called rincon boriqua that used to be open 24 hours. Mellow bar which is pretty much under the tree in the first foto.
Many of these street walkers are barrio girls. Many look under age and I have seen some walking with "pimps". ... even the pimps look underage. . . .probably a brother or cousin that gets a cut. . . .
These girls will probably be good at picking your pockets especially when you pants are around your ankles. Mostly dominican guys in cars frequent these chicas. . . .
Cheeno is right. . ..avoid this area. . . .

How is Santo Domingo during the nightime? Is it safe to walk from club to club if they are within walking distance of each other or should I always take a cab? In sosua walking at night was never an issue. Could it be different in SD?

SD is more spread out and you'd be better of with taxis. Boca Chica is similar to Sosua (but much smaller) and walking is fine.

As far as where the main action is.
Both the beach and the main street (Duarte vs Pedro Clisante) are smaller.

If you are walking in the Malecon, then you will be fine.
The casa's are open until midnight (Sunday through Thursday) and open until 2am (Friday and Saturday).
But do NOT go to a casa with a cab driver. Because he will get a cut which means that you might pay more.
So for example, if you want to go to The Girl's House, then tell the cab driver that you want him to take you to the Intercontinental Hotel. After you are done with him, then walk over to The Girl's House.

You can walk, but avoid unlit areas or dark buildings.. on the Malecon, I've been advised to walk as far out as the Jaragua but not further, it gets dark and shady there.. around the area where people sell paintings during the day, in front of the abandoned highrise..

Very good point. Thank you for mentioning it.
For example, I stayed at the Hilton and the walk from the Hilton hotel to the Jaragua Casino is quite dark and shady.
I never had any problems walking in this area late at night. I have done Taekwondo for several years. So unless the guy has a machine gun, I should be fine.
But many of my friends have warned me not to walk in this area.
