Catalonia Hotel, Santo Domingo
Catalonia Hotel is located on Avenida George Washington (The Malecon) in Plaza Malecon Center

Check in went well but there is bad news for serial mongers. There is a $30.00 fee for guest that are not registered. I booked for 2 so I only had to check my date in when she arrived.
Attachment 155178
There is a bar and a coffee shop on the ground floor next to the registration desk.

In addition there is a sitting room with a computer, television and of all things a chess table.

Malecon Centre....was this hotel formerly the Hilton? Last time I stayed there, the hotel seemed to be doing just ok, high prices during the week, low or reasonable prices on the weekend. Malecon Centre was a ghost town though.

I am not sure what the name formally was.

I checked out the Hilton Malecon on google, which sent me to Hotels.com, tried to book a room for March 1 - 3, but it was not available. The address of that hotel was 500 George Washington, which is the address for the Catalonia Hotel. So yes, it is the same hotel, and explains why you can't book a room at the Hilton Malecon
Be interesting to hear what the hotel is like now.

Pearl Urban Lounge
On the 5th floor there are two restaurants., one for the breakfast buffet and the Pearl Urban Lounge which is the outdoor section of the second indoor restaurant.
I took a photo from my room of the pool on the 7th floor and the Pearl Urban Lounge beneath it on the 5th floor.

When you walk into the restaurant there is an indoor dinning room and the lounge is outside

They played smooth jazz and the breeze from the ocean was very comfortable. The ambiance was great during the day but even nicer after dark.
I had salmon for dinner which was a small portion but great and the breakfast buffet in the morning was incredible

Conclusion
It is good to know that the Catalonia Hotel was formally the Hilton which would explain the caliber of the hotel. I was thoroughly impressed with my entire stay. Check in went smoothly and the staff was very professional. The rooms range from $100.00 per night basic to suites for over $200.00 per night. My room ended up being 6000 pesos which included taxes.
The only negative I could see from the mongering stand point is there is a $30.00 fee for unregistered guest so this is not the type of hotel you want to use if you want to run multiple chics in and out of your room. In my case I just booked for 2 and enjoyed my evening with one date.
There were many facilities that I did not use like the spa, gym and pool because I was only there for one night. This is a 4 star hotel, I had an excellent experience and would definitely return.
Re: Catalonia Hotel, Santo Domingo
In 2010 - 2012 I used to use the Priceline bidding site on the Santo Domingo hotels. I used to get the Hilton for between $70-75 a night on a weekend taxes included. The regular booking sites would have it at about $110-150, so they claimed. I never stayed much as I only did that if I had to fly out of Santo Domingo.
Prices haven't changed that much.
