WHOA, is it RAINING in Santo Domingo!!!!!!

It's coming down in cats and dogs.

We've got a tropical storm coming through, and I swear, it feels like Hurr. Georges all over again.

I had to drive through 3 ft. deep water for over a half a kilometer on one of the city's main avenues, with dozens of cars abandoned in the middle.

There were various landslides on the 6 de Nov. expressway, one which happened in the exact moment I drove by, which pushed my truck sideways about 3 ft just as I passed it, (a 2010 Land Cruiser behind me didn't make it, and got pushed into the ditch) and I saw 2 jeepetas in different places that hit deep water fast, and rolled.

There's about 2 ft of water in the plaza area in front of our free zone entrance. Needless to say, I'm the only one at work at the moment.

There's tons of flooding all over the city. You'll be able to check out the local papers on line a little later this morning and see what's up.

Pretty ugly morning.

All in all, probably not a good time to come down to monger.

In my time coming down, I have talked with several expats who prefer to live on the north coast due to the fact that during the hurricane season, the south coast gets the lions share of the major storms and the north coast is relatively calm in comparison. I have heard that there has never been a direct hit from a hurricane on the north coast, only the outer bands have passed through. Is this true??

Yes. By the time the effects of the hurricanes hit the north coast, they're usually tropical storms at worst. There has been some damage from hurricanes throughout history. I remember Hurricane Jeanne (I think) "tore" Sosua up. The damage was weak compared to the south coast, but it was a bitch. I think knotty and Jayman were somewhat caught up in that...they'd be able to tell more accurate stories.

Usually it just rains extra long and hard, and the flooding is a pain in the ass, but no casualties.

that was a bitch when i was in sosua. the whole town was flooded. the streets were a mess with power lines down. The Latino's signwas hanging on a short thread. nothing really was open and you had to be careful where you walked because of those powerlines. but i have to admit, after the storm passed, the town was quick to get things back in order which was a relief.

That was back in 2005 if I am not mistaken right Knotty?

nahh, it was Sept 04 cuz it was during my 1st trip. it happened the day after PS left after his 1st trip as well. he was able to disappear before getting caught in that bitch.

SANTO DOMINGO. - For a third straight day the city awoke under torrential rain as another tropical wave passes along the country’s southern coast, just hours after the formation of Tropical Storm Bonnie south of Florida.

The National Meteorology Office (Onamet) forecasts increasing rains on Saturday and continuing into Sunday and Monday, but less intense.

It posted warnings of flash floods and mudslides for residents in low lying areas and next to rivers and streams located in the eastern and south central provinces.

that's why couldn't return, the storms came with me.

The weather passed thru here this morning as a Tropical Storm. Had about half a day of torrential rains and thunderstorms but cleared up quickly. No serious damage in South Dade. The front side of the storm had a kick but there was no backside. Now it's falling apart.

I flew back to DR friday night and fri morning in MIA was ugly but it passed quickly. My first ever DR trip was a short time before Hurricane George. I rmember my second trip many of the trees on the way in from the airport were down.

How is the weather now in Sosua? All forecast i am seeing says to expect a thunderstorm everyday through Sunday.... Sad that this is going to be the case throughout my stay there...

This was posted a couple of weeks ago.It was not that bad in Sosua .

I know and understand it isnt that bad, just want to get a sense of how the weather is now...raining heavily everyday? would I need to carry an umbrella with me everywhere I go?

It wouldn't be a bad idea, but normally, storms pass quickly.

I usually have 2-3 umbrellas I buy in Jumbo for 2 bucks apiece, and carry one of them if I think it's gonna come down. Those are the little 6 inchers when they're closed.

Girls love it when you give them umbrellas too...

Was in La Capital with two buddies last Monday. Our last day and we had to check out at 1 pm with an 8:30 pm flight. So after lunch at Hooters, we went to GBP. There was no parking alongside the building so we parked down the street about 100 meters. It was getting ready to rain and when we were inside, we could hear the storm pass by. Afterwards we went outside to find our brand new rental car with two inches of water in the back seat floorboards. Spent the ride to the airport bailing it out with a plastic cup.
