Re: Big business in sosua
Dumb idea, but why would it be "bootleg"? Maybe you have to get health and safety clearance?
Anyway ask Rick. He is making so much money from his Film Nights at Rocky's he will be able to retire to a tropical island soon.
The thing about gringos running businesses here is that, in the rare cases where it is profitable, Dominicans will find a way to muscle in and take it off you. Either that or they will start a clone, paying lower salaries and avoiding lots of the costs gringos have to pay.
But I think an open-air cinema would be nice, avoiding the rainiest months.
Re: Big business in sosua
lol
isn't there a movie theater in charamicos?
Re: Big business in sosua
He's gonna open a movie theater, but had to ask for 800 pesos? Hell, he's gonna be the most successful gringo ever. Wouldn't worry about him one bit.
Re: Big business in sosua
if he really wanted to do well he'd fill the place with comfy couches, pump up the A/C and play cartoons all day.
and it would be good for us because the place would be loaded with chicas.
:rofl::rofl::rofl:
Re: Big business in sosua
Bootleg because his plan is to show first run movies using a DVD projector. If you show movies for a purely commercial purpose you have to buy them from the production company. Otherwise you are bootlegging.

Actually I was in rockys today and tried to tell the guy that Rick already has movie night. But you know how excited people can get after getting laid a few times! It is funny how people think they can easily do overseas what they know to be impossible at home.
Re: Big business in sosua
Bootleg theater, bad idea. But where is the closest real Movie theater? I know there is one in the capital.
Guy has the wrong idea. I rarely watch TV while on vacation. Why would I go to the movies? This is a business that should cater to Dominicans. But I have not seen many gringo run businesses that cater to Dominicans.
Re: Big business in sosua
Isn't there a legit movie theatre at Playa Dorada?

Maybe he is on to something here....A movie theatre that plays XXX on a big screen in a dark building, offering chicas in the lobby to "rent" as your movie date, offering that Naughty Movie House Blowjob Fantasy:rofl:
Robert can work concession selling popcorn to earn extra blowjob money:mrgreen:

I know it was still open in December 2011 but I haven't been in the Playa Dorada complex since then.
Best advice for opening a business here is the old saying "if you want to leave the island with a million then you better bring 2 million". hehehe!

I tried to explain that most tourists do not watch enough movies to support a business. I know from visiting various countries that theaters rely on locals. He has only traveled to sosua and only three times. I eventually told him and another brother that I cannot deal with stupidity and left them in the street. He kept claiming Dominicans were too stupid to start a theater and that was why sosua did not have one. Seems to me he is the one being silly here. Like lots of guys he will be broke in a few years. WhAt do you all think? Anybody else run into this guy? He asked me for 800pesos earlier today.
I think it sounds like a great idea and an impeccable business plan. I don't foresee anything going wrong and our entrepreneurial friend making millions and millions of dollars. I only wish I could have thought of it first!
Re: Big business in sosua
Im not sure he would have to pay royalties to the movie companies. The DR isnt subject to our laws. just like the Dr was making generic viagra over there before the medicine patent of 12 years expired here in the states.

Movies are copyrights, not patents. US copyrights in the DR have been protected by the Buenos Aires copyright treaty since 1912. In general, international copyrights are protected by the Berne Convention in almost every single country in the world.
If what you were saying were true, there wouldn't be a single legitimate movie theater in the entire Dominican Republic.
Pharmaceutical patents are a mess all unto their own. There are international patent treaties, but they make exceptions for "public health" generic medicines, as determined by the country dealing with the public health issue. The loophole is so big that pharmaceutical companies almost don't bother enforcing their patents in 3rd world countries anymore.

Maybe he could partner with the guy in the white suit who made that "movie" about making it rain in Sosua: http://news.insearchofchicas.org/for...-everywhere!!) Those two guys should hit it off great as they are both have such brilliant minds. The white suit guy could make the "first run movies" and the other could play them on his projector and together they could make big money in Sosua. Then they could make it rainusing $5 bills instead of $1 bills.

I guess he never heard what happen to Jerry Lewis and all his movie theathers. JA JA
I've shown movies outside but it was for fun or a promotion not to make money, which you will not.
