08/2016 - DR from the West Coast for a song!
I have always loved Kayak. And after my latest ticket purchase, I love it even more now!
So, as I am prone to do, I am on Kayak checking out dates and fares for the early part of next year. I live 25 minutes from the Sacramento airport, so that is my preference if possible. But if not, San Francisco is 2.5 hours away and many more options, as well as being easier on my cc. Sometimes the fare difference might amount to as much as $350 dollars, so even if having to buy a ticket for both Amtrak and BART, which takes me straight to the airport, it's still a big savings for me.
But this time I couldn't believe it when I saw it, so I pulled the trigger for my next DR trip, March 9-18, 2017.
Will be flying down on Aeromexico, 1 stop each way in Mexico City, for a grand total of $309. I even added trip insurance, which I never do, for $20 bucks. So, $329 all in to the DR from the Left Coast! I feel like one of you New York dudes who have always been able to fly down for a song. Well.....guess who's crooning a tune now?
Arrive in SDQ at 7:25 am on a Friday, so I'll taxi over to the Metro and bus it up to the north coast. I'll head back for a couple nights in Boca at the end of the week, and depart at 11 am, a pretty convenient time, on that Saturday.
Kayak was showing a 47% discount on the regular fare price, so don't know if this was some scheduled discount sale or what. But, whatever the case, I am booked and have my seat for a March return.
I'll have enough jack left over in my pockets when I hit town to make it rain in Classicos if I wanted. But......nawwwww.
Maybe just make it fog up a bit around my table! :corky:
Re: DR from the West Coast for a song!
I think the price drops we're seeing may be the result of the airlines putting up new fuel contracts. The ridiculously low prices to Kenya on Turkish were followed by equally ridiculous prices on Lufthansa and Swiss in short order. I can only guess. Whatever the case, I am very happy about it and plan to make anything more than two days off into a mini-holiday travel opportunity for the entirety of 2017.
Recent conversations have inspired interest in Angola for me but I have no ear for Portuguese so I'm going to double down on Swahili to bridge the language gap and afford me a little more mobility across borders. I don't expect this low fare thing to last very long and when the correction comes I'll probably see my travel radius shrink by about 4,000 miles but I will be getting it while the getting's good.
Now if they could only get the fares to DAR down a little for my Winter Break trip.

No Swahili in Angola.
Re: DR from the West Coast for a song!
There is much more Swahili spoken in Angola than English. Especially true in the Capital.

You very well may be right about that. I was also checking Kenya for May, and Turkish was offering a fare from SFO for $799 all in!
So I might not wait for September in '17.

That's a crazy fare, the cheapest I've ever gotten has been around $450 and that was years ago. But its true, I just looked and it's still available. The next cheapest is $572. And only a 14 hr trip both ways. The cheaper flights on AA usually run 28 hrs with a long layover in MIA or CLT.
I tried some random dates and found the same fare offer as early as 9/8-9/14 2016 (next month), but only to SDQ. Not POP or MBJ.

December is tough. Ex-pats travelling in both directions to be with family for the holidays. Have you checked Southwest? Their "wannagetaway" prices to MBJ have given me a 2nd wind for Negril. I am determined to sneak into the D.R. before the year is out but I won't know when until I pull the trigger.

J Cramer himself would be proud of the deal. Smells crisp honeysuckle. I have seen it recently on Secret Flying, and guess what, asked myself if Mr. Smooth is going to pull it. Have you given a thought about a stopover in D.F.?

Sometimes between you and the inside nautical nonsense jargon that Westy puts up here, trying to understand you guys is like trying to decifer some ancient cave wall hyrogliphics from Cro Magnon man.
A stopover in D.F.? Sorry dude, haven't a clue.
Anyone........? Beuhler....?
Re: 08/2016 - DR from the West Coast for a song!

Ok, I get it. A guy with a tv show on a network I never watch and the initials for a part of town in a city I have never been to.
Gotta get with the program I guess!

Cramer returned to his show yesterday after a summer vacation. He got a live caller somewhere from Sacramento, and responded something along the line 'he liked the smell of honeysuckle' there. You can get a stopover for free or for $100 if allowed (see your fare). In the Federal District of Mexico City you can visit Frida Kahlo's museum, or maybe Trotsky's gravesite  At least you can report on Air Mexico and the airport.
Re: 08/2016 - DR from the West Coast for a song!
Sullivan Street is near the hotel I use when I travel through Mexico City. There are several routes to get to my hotel from the airport, but this one seems to be preferred by the taxi drivers!
Smooth how long is your layover? Are all flights on Aeromexico? I think Aeromexico flies out of the newer terminal in Mexico City, Terminal 2, so that is a bonus.

So a street in Mexico's capital where hordes of whores roam, is named for an Irishman? How about that?
Going, my layover is just about 5 hours. Arriving around 7:15 pm, and depart for SDQ around 1:15 am or so. On the return, it's about 4:15. All flights are on Aeromexico.
Won't be going outside the terminal. Once I go through transit security, I'll check to see where my departing gate is, then make my way to the nearest cantina for a few Negra Modelos and hope that the bartender is a dead ringer for Salma Hayek. :iconTU:

Its not safe there at all.
Last time I was there was December 2000.
