07/2014 - Crazy low fares to POP from EWR in July on AA
If you can handle ridiculous layovers in MIA (10+ hrs, and usually overnight)
$294 r/t confirmed on aa.com. available multiple days this month
I wouldn't have posted this due to the layover alone (which kinda makes these flights worthless) but this is the lowest fare I've ever seen from NY to POP. Talk about undercutting competition, the next lowest (non-aa) fare from NY to POP in July is $510

Yeah, I can do Meddy- SDQ for around 500 and change if I want to layover in Panama from one day to the next, coming and going. I won't be doing that anytime soon (maybe when I have lots of free time)

I don't know why you would?

Re: 07/2014 - Crazy low fares to POP from EWR in July on AA
And it gets even more ridiculous.
If you're willing to add another stop (usually in Charlotte, it seems) the price drops to $260. round trip. to Puerto Plata.
I don't think anyone's gonna wanna take a 2-stop 20hr flight there (or even the onestop in 10hrs) but posting this purely for the 'holy fuck, $260 r/t fares to DR!" and it isn't even a sale, this is the price through Sept-Oct-Nov.
Obviously, if American Airlines can afford to post this price on a two-stop flight, United & JetBlue can afford to get their nonstops under $400. At the $480+ they've been charging for the last year or so it's like they don't even want us to fly there.
Honestly, if it went back down to $350ish I would do weekend trips, I'd be taking a trip at least every other month, but I'm not paying $500+ to fly to POP just on principle.

Well now i don't feel so bad. :p
Anything less than $800 is a bargain for me. I could get it for less, but travel times sky rocket to over 24 hours. That's just not happening.

It is what it is.
You can't take the money with you.

AMEN! :ilike:
The only reason I take pricing into consideration at times is to keep lessening the years between now and retirement.

No, but you can damned sure maximize what you get out of it. You should know that. You're an accountant, aren't you?

There are 3 or 4 airlines that travel to DR so if all 4 are $500 or more, you pay that price or stay home.

Yeah I agree....those 3am leave times...or 26 hour travel times to save 150 bucks isn't worth it....
I am getting like Beas now...love that direct flight from JFK-SDQ...3 hours and your there....sweet....
I was looking at 392 for crazy time itinary or 525 for good times in August....its worth the 130 bucks.....

But JFK to SDQ is normal. There are 10 - 20 a day from 3 or 4 airlines.

Re: 07/2014 - Crazy low fares to POP from EWR in July on AA
I would not do 2 stops, with a so much wasted time , even if it were for FREE..
but thats just me.. not knocking it for those who need to save that extra $50 each way or whatever it is.. from like a regular ticket price..
but lets do the math, 20 hours of travel, 17 wasted each way ?
I can fly TONIGHT if I wanted to , for $518 .. on Delta or Jet Blue. and be poolside tomorrow AM.
that has more value to me.
AA can keep these cheapo seats.
but its good to know

Re: 07/2014 - Crazy low fares to POP from EWR in July on AA
it's a fucking tease is what it is. If I'm gonna spend 20+ hours getting there then I'll go to Thailand or the Philippines. That price is ridiculous, though. The base fare is $80!
funny thing is, it's $244 to fly from EWR-MIA-POP
but if you catch that same flight from MIA on to POP it's $625.

I didn't mean getting something cheaper was maximizing my money. There are many ways to "maximize" your money. I have commented in the past that I have usually paid on the higher end for my flights because I prefer to travel on certain days and at certain times, and arrival time on the outbound and inbound is important to me. For me, that is maximizing my money.

Thanks for the acknowledgment... I refuse to take multiple stop trips when I can go direct, spend a couple hundred bucks more and get there 10-20 hours less in total time... The way I look at it is if I dont have the money, I stay home till I do... And, my time is worth more then the extra time it takes me to get to these places... If JB still flies direct from JFK- CTG when I am ready, im in no matter what the cost... (of coure I have ome kind of limit) but, last I checked random dates, it was under 500 all in for that round trip... JFK-CTG, CTG-JFK

I would take the connection and save almost $400.

The last time I checked, I was able to do STI for about $250 less than POP. I considered it for a nano second. By the time I paid to get to the coast, the time lost, and some screwy flight times, it was an easy decision.

I did that in 2003-2004 when the taxi was $24 one way.

too much of a hassle now. If the price difference doubles, I'll definitely be taking a second look at it.

Before that President fucked things up, everything was dirt cheap.

Re: 07/2014 - Crazy low fares to POP from EWR in July on AA
U guys are comparing
Sitting at 2 Diff Airports in the USA for 17 EXTRA Hours like a Schmuck.
Probably spend like $50 in crappy airport food alone cuz you bored.
to Landing at STI at like midnight, direct smooth flight
enjoying a lat night out maybe, or a bite to eat. Then Sleep comfortably in a cabana a couple hours , get your first nut..
Get up have a nice breakfast, and take a Comfortable Bus to Sosua ??
those 2 scenarios are even in the same money saving comparison ?
Really
LOL
-
Re: 07/2014 - Crazy low fares to POP from EWR in July on AA
why would you sit in the airport? hop the metrorail into miami for $2.25, go sit on the beach, relax, have some lunch/dinner/breakfast/whatever. it's really not that hard to kill 12-14 hrs in miami.
not saying I'd do it, but, otoh - those direct jetblue flights get into santiago at 2-3am (unless you fly out of ewr in the morning, but then you can tack another $100-200 onto the fare), so you're either spending $75 on a cab, renting a car (if any agency is open) or taking a cab to a hotel and blowing $30-50 there, plus the bus to pop in the morning. basically, you still wind up with 7-8hrs to kill and you still wind up spending $50+.and lose a day/night.
same same.
btw, that's the closest thing to a TR that you've ever posted.
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Tell the truth now, some of y'all need to SEE the Ocean when you Land.. or you dont feel like you really arrived in the DR yet...
:rofl::rofl:
Personally I prefer landing at STI or SDQ, even given same price.
but for $200 + Savings , sometimes as high as $400 diff..
no way i want to pay that to land at POP just to get that Aerial view ?
nah.. pass...
Yes Deezl, I will SPEND my Savings in Santiago....call me silly..
Never took a Taxi to Sosua in my LIFE.. that would be pissing $ away.
