Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
Got my iphone ready for my trip to Sosua.
Already have some apps that hopefully will help me on the trip such as
Translators
Google translate
Jibbigo English-Spanish (Because it works offline)
Itranslate voice
(Seems like they all have somewhat different results)
Currency translator
Exchange LE
Text + gold for free texting
Got my music apps, weather channel and others
Any other must have apps that others who have been there find useful for the journey?

Or to extend the existing one. :corky:
Re: Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
Badoo application. You need internet acces but most hotel have wi-fi and lots of wi-fi access from restaurants and bar can be found walking the streets.
Re: Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
For free wifi phone calls to the US.
MagicJack
Skype
Google Voice with Talkatone.
Lots of chicas with Blackberrys are also using whatsapp.
You can text and send/receive pics over wifi..just like BBM.
whatsapp is also cool because you can set it up with your DR sim...but still use it over wifi when you are back home in the US. The messages continue to "appear" to come from your DR number.
If your iphone is jailbroken, or (factory unlocked)...you can put a DR sim in it.
I prefer Claro because you can get prepaid Data/internet. (~300RD for a week).

Is that for iPhone only or for Android as well for data?
Re: Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
My favorite app when travelling is Fake-A-Call.
You can set it up so your phone will ring at a certain time, or in (x) minutes.
So someone don't really want to spend time with attaches themselves to me, and I can't politely shake 'em I'll head to the washroom and set up FAC. I return to the table and at the pre-set time my phone rings and ... wouldn't you know it ... something urgent has come up ... and I have to go tend to it!
The other thing it is good for is planting mis-information ... a chica normally won't believe anything you tell her ... but if she overhears it while you are on the the phone ... well it's gospel.

I use WhatsApp on my Android here. It doesn't cost anything to text from the states to the DR. Just uses some data.

Thanks Mrblackluv,
Might have to change over to Claro. Orange doesn't offer a data plan on pre pay.

Thanks mrblackluv. I was just thinking about going ahead and jailbreaking (w/ unlock) my iphone. For 300RD, I will pay for a week of data.
Do you know how much Claro charges for a iphone DR SIM?
Re: Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
I use Viber, like Whatsapp, you can send pictures and text.
Unlike Whatsapp with Viber you can make calls over the Wi-Fi also.
http://www.viber.com/
I use them both but I like Viber better

Viber is great, I use it to maintain contact with some girl I know in DR. Only problem is that the person needs an apple product if I'm not mistaken like an iPhone, or an iPod. Most girls have Blackberry's I can count on one hand the number of girls I've met with iPhones.

Okay thanks for clearing that up. I was wondering why is it that it's not as popular as Whatsapp, I've used both, and I think Viber is overall better just assumed you needed an Apple product.
Re: Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
Heres a tip my GF taught me. I have a iphone 4s. I down load the skype app. Then i buy a skype mobile number for $6 a month. My US carrier is Verizon and thier coverage sucks in Sosua and many other places in the RD. Simply call verizon and they will unlock your phone for foriegn use. This is free but they will only unlock one phone each six months for ypu. Last thing i do before leaving states is call forward all of my verizon calls to my mobile skype number.
When you get to RD go to Claro store and buy sim card for Black Berry. Yes Black Berry..!! You will need to cut the card to micro size. Easy to do with razor blade. Instructions on the net. Then put card in your iphone. You then call Claro and transfer voice minutes to internet tiime. Cost is just 25 pesos a day. If you use a iphone card from claro internet is 50 pesos a day. Worth the savings to cut a card. My GF believes ythe phone gets better reception with the BB sim card.
Another trick is to mask the caller id on your mobile skype number. That way when you make a outgoing call to USA using mobile skype App the recepient will see your USA cell number on thier caller ID. I make calls to USA for .07 cents each call. People back home have no idea i am in RD. My USA cell number shows up on their caller ID.
Now your iphone can make and receive call from both numbers at the same time !!!!! Just set two different ring tones if you want.
I find the mobile skype app works well even in areas with slower internet. If the connection is slow there is a slight lag in the conversation. Just talk slow and hesitate between phrases and they will not notice.
Also download Yahoo, MSN, Whats App, live profile messengers. Most chicas prefer messengers as they dont use minutes like regular texts do. One problem with iphone is you cant use BB messenger. Many many chicas use this. I bring my BB torch along if i need to use BB messenger i simply take card put of iphone and put in my torch.
Happy Huntin !!
Re: Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
Now that you have BB internet fir 25 pesos a day.
Copied from DR 1 Forum
Trick for cheap 3G Internet from Claro
Blackberry social (*111#) prepaid, per day RD$25
Open APN in BB (Options-Advanced-TCP/IP)
or Accesspoint in Nokia
with:
APN/accesspoint name: internet.ideasclaro.com.do
in BB::: Use APN Authentication (enabled); username; blank, password:blank
in Nokia::: Password prompt: No, authentication: normal, username: blank, password: blank
Now tether your smartphone with your laptop or desktop PC via USB cable for fastest connection (Blackberry desktop manager for BB; or Nokia OviSuite or PCSuite for Nokia). You can now use your smartphone/BB as modem and get 3G speeds for RD$25 per day, all taxes included.
You can also use this 3G internet within your smartphone (chat, email, browsing, even VOIP). With APN/Accesspoint enabled, you will be able to use all services and Internet apps on Nokia (and other smartphones), including OviMaps or Google Maps (with GPS), Gmail App, etc., and you will be able to use Facebook, Opera Mini, BB PIN and BB Mail on Blackberrys. You will NOT be able to use BB Maps or GoogleMaps on BB (require BIS Full) or Gmail App (BIS full required again). on BB you will NOT be able to use native BB Internet browser, but you can download Opera Mini and use it via APN enabled service. Btw I like Opera Mini much more for browsing on BB than BB native browser.
On Nokia and other smartphones (Iphone, Android) you can use ALL apps, because they go via open APN (internet access point). On BB, many apps go via BIS service (RIM) and work only with FULL BIS service (not BIS Social) and some apps can go via all of APN/BIS/WIFI (either access type will work). Rule of thumb for BB - if you can use your app with Wifi, you can use it with APN open on Claro BIS Social. If your BB app does not work on Wifi, you will not be able to use it with BIS Social with Open APN.
Enjoy 3G prepaid internet for just RD$25 per day!
(and for those whose spouses/friends/family work at Claro, PLEASE DO NOT tell them of this; just let the community enjoy this inexpensive 3G internet service)
Re: Must Have Iphone Apps for Sosua
Good tips..
I'm gonna upgrade my iphone soon..
My current DR iphone is a 3gs.
I knew about the BB social.
They always ask me if I want social or "full" when I setup the weekly internet.
I always get "full" for ~rd300 per week...because I tether, use Google Voice etc.. and also VPN to the states.
I didn't want to worry about specific ports being blocked etc.
Sounds like social might work fine with an iphone..will check it out next time.
