Guy has the wrong idea. I rarely watch TV while on vacation. Why would I go to the movies? This is a business that should cater to Dominicans. But I have not seen many gringo run businesses that cater to Dominicans.
that is what I tried to tell him. Gringos are not going to sit in a theater for 2-4 hours watching a movie. Now we might do it once a week, the way Rockys does it . But there is no way to sustain a commercial theater off the gringo market.
yes locals need a theater but will they spend enough each day to pay for expenses. I doubt it.
Even in the USA, a solid consumer economy, most theaters rely totally on concessions to make a profit. So now he has to count on Dominicans both coming every day and then buying food.
In rio de janeiro the theaters cater to upper middle class locals. There has to be a large population in that category. We all know sosua is not in that category.
i was not trying to burst his bubble but sometimes guys think they can just come down here and takeover.

Here's a list of every legit movie theater in the country and their showtimes.

In Santiago you have movie theaters in Plaza Internacional (Cinema Centro Cibao), Bella Terra Mall, Colinas Mall, and the Hollywood (I don't know who still goes there, but I think it's open). All of those are closer than the capital.

There are loads of them. They are called compraventas. Some are general, some specialised (electronics, jewellery, furniture, or whatever). No doubt the upmarket ones don't call themselves compraventas but something more pretentious, but I don't move in those circles.
Sorry to hear you have fallen on hard times, Captain, but that is what happens when you fall in love with a whore and send her WU. Now you will have to pawn your fake Rolex.
My first steady girlfriend here was given a large icebox by a previous boyfriend to start selling cold drinks in her barrio. Actually quite a promising idea because it was quite a long walk to the nearest colmado or bar. But of course the silly bitch sold all the stock and never replaced it. In the two years I knew her that ice-box was in and out of the compraventa at least three times. She would borrow 5000 pesos on it then pay 7000 to get it out again, but it never contained another bottle of drink after the first time.

There was. I haven't noticed it on my last three visits to the mall.
I went there once with Ajax718 (what happened to him?). We picked up two chicas then discovered they were ... how can I put this? ... off the menu. Wanting to let them down gently we took them to the cinema in Playa Dorada. One of the more sordid experiences of my life. Apart from stifling heat, the smell of sweat and urine, awful sound and projection system, we seem to have arrived during a confrontation between two gangs of motoconchistas and their molls. They spent the whole film running in and out, changing seats, necking, brawling, throwing food about, shouting and singing. Despite this they did not spoil my enjoyment of "Final Destination 17". The movie was made for that sort of audience. It wasn't cheap, either, by Dominican standards. I cannot believe they paid anywhere near full price.

I tried to explain that most tourists do not watch enough movies to support a business. I know from visiting various countries that theaters rely on locals. He has only traveled to sosua and only three times. I eventually told him and another brother that I cannot deal with stupidity and left them in the street. He kept claiming Dominicans were too stupid to start a theater and that was why sosua did not have one. Seems to me he is the one being silly here. Like lots of guys he will be broke in a few years. WhAt do you all think? Anybody else run into this guy? He asked me for 800pesos earlier today.
I think its a great idea that he takes his life savings of $4,000 and go "all in". He will succeed. Please stop hating.

But he doesn't have $4000 yet. His plan is to bum 800 pesos ($20) from everyone he meets. Once he has found two hundred such 800-peso "investors" he will have his $4000 seed money for his big business idea.

Actually, our erstwhile governor here in Massachusetts started his company Bain Capital back in the '80s with other people's money too (in addition to his daddy's), i.e., some rich dudes in Miami who were associated with the death squads in El Salvador. http://www.democracynow.org/2012/8/1..._bain_launched
He's now running for President here. Heard of that dude called Mitt Romney? But I don't want to get political here....oops, maybe I just did :rofl:

They actually have 3 rooms (located upstairs, central plaza) for different movies. However, the support for this theater is pretty sad:confused: The largest, and most successful theater close to the north coast would be found in Santiago (Hollywood 7). However, a close second can be found much closer in Sosua at Rocky's movie nights:wink:
