02/2017 - A little Dominican history ... Perejil? Persil?
We're all aware of the rivalry between Dominican girls and Haitian girls, in our favorite DR destinations. This isn't a new thing, by any means; there's a deep-seated enmity between the DR and Haiti that actually goes back to the colonial days, before the Haitians threw off the French yoke and won independence for the island of Hispaniola. And if the deportation scheme of the last year or so appears cruel, things have been worse, much worse ...

Can you elaborate on this a bit? Are you referring to in Sosua and Boca Chica competing for tricks?

Yes ... More than that, though, I wanted to offer a link to that bit of history.

I doubt many of those Dominican chicas know or even care to know about that history.

They do not know why. I have asked several domncans why. Most did not have a reason. A couple said either Haitans are bad people or they worship the devil.
That is thr thing about hating an entire group or race. Reasonable thought is lost.

Understood, Rahsta ... I thought some of us might find it interesting.
I wouldn't expect the Dominicanas of Sosua to know much of anything about their nation's history -- I would not be surprised at a chica who doesn't know Leonel Fernandez from Rafael Trujillo. After all, what does the past matter to someone who's living hand-to-mouth?

Sad but true. Even more sad is the fact that the almost maniacal distrust and hatred that many Dominicans feel toward Haitians is not based directly on the history of the two countries but on the fact that their hatred is a product of conditioning since birth.
Actually it is sad to see that type of illogic anywhere it occurs in the world.

It's no much different than children raised to be racist against one group or another. A few have gave me the real history lesson, but I agree, the average chicas we deal with are just ignorant about the history.
