56% of Dominicans are in favor of a Presidential candidate being allowed to seek re-election. Re-election had been banned when the Constitution was amended in 1994, but then reinstated in 2004, when then President Hipolito Mejia sought a second term. He lost, but now his successor President Leonel Fernandez can seek a third term in office, and he (Mejia) cannot run again for President. In his first term, Fernandez was banned from running again. The 2004 amendment to the Constitution allows a President to seek another term in office.
