(in 2006 it was around $1.35 canadian to get a usd)
The Loonie hit an all-time high against the Dominican peso today, even including the banking crisis days when it was over 50+ to the US$.
I remember getting MGD at Mountainview for 50 pesos, $1 US.

The Dominican peso was around 10:1 CDN$ when I started going to the DR 10 years ago and back then the cambios would ding people for 10-20% changing CDN$.

Now there are places that only ding you for 5% or so which is quite reasonable since buying US$ and using the ATM typically costs 2-3% or more.

Probably you could get comparable chicas for TLN for 1500 to 1750 pesos in 2007, whereas the sort of chicas who were asking 2000 pesos then might be asking 2500 now. I know I never paid more than 1500 TLN back then but I would find it hard work finding the same standard of chica for that price now if I didn't have a phone full of numbers gathered over four years. So again prices have gone up by around 20%.

Hard to research and compare free-lancers because they don't have fixed "menus" but if you look at Passions or Blackbeards prices you will see they have gone up by around 20% in the last four years. Blackbeards used to be 2500 TLN, now it's 3000. Don't have the Passions prices to hand but I know they have increased similarly. So have most hotel, restaurant or taxi prices.

Nothing to do with the difference between ex-pats and tourists. Only place there are significant savings are in the deals now offered by AI hotels but the rise in airfares more than cancels that out.

No doubt you can come up with a long list of exceptions. I am talking about average prices across the board.
Anything having to do with the chicas, including what is "comparable" is always in the eye of the beholder. Chicas can ask for whatever they want. It doesn't mean they will get it. The art of the deal comes into play there. The places you mentioned have a price structure set by the management/owners, especially with Passions. Obviously the market with those places ain't hurting.

You most definitely are correct talking about the rising airfares. But, a distinction must be made with those as well. As I fly from the west coast, I have always paid anywhere between $550 up to the high $600's, depending on the time of year. It has gone up from out here but I think with east coast flights, that is where the real price gouging has come. I have heard of the low fares guys paid from NYC a couple of years back and beyond, low 400's and such. Maybe some flights even lower. I can sympathize with them now having to pay close to double what they paid before.

In that light, from the time you lock your front door to leave on a trip until you unlock it coming home, maybe you haven't saved anything at all.

The current rate at Ria in Santiago is $37.75 DOP = $1 USD. There is an Ochoa next to La Sirena next to the ferreteria. It goes against my prime directive to not search out the best rate available.

How about the Canadian exchange rate? I'm planning on doing taking Canadian with me..forget the double exchange. The banks have enough cash.
Pass out at 3, wake up at 10, go out to eat then do it again.

If you bring Canadian only exchange at the banks or WU. Every other place will fuck you. $CDN is higher than $US right now (1.0245).

I see that the exchange rate is 37.85 to the dollar when I check Yahoo Finance on-line.

What is the rate you could expect to get in Sosua or Costambar? Is it a little lower than what is quoted on-line? What have you guys gotten this week?

    thanks
