Where is a good place to change money near pop airport?

I usually change at Jennys in Costambar.

Was wondering if I could get a better deal if I went to a bank like was just mentioned and change a large amount, like $1,500?

One peso difference would add up in that case. Maybe there is a bank at la Sirena ?
Other place? Thanks for the help!

When I've went to BB's I would get good rates at whatever bank the taxi took me to on the way. The last trip which was last month, I didn't feel like taking the detour so I put my trust in Jenny. I think I got close to 37.8 on $1,000 US. I've heard that she's the way to go when going to BB's.

    Per Citibank:

    1 US dollar = 37.5000 Dominican pesos

    Per XE:

    1.00 USD = 37.6500 DOP

The banks all off the same rate, do not think it has changed much in the last month. If you use your card at an ATM you will get the best rate. The ATM at the Progreso bank will give out 20,000 pesos per withdrawal which makes the $ 8 charges less painful.

They use the same rate as published by the Central Bank.

Don't bust your chops for differences in rates, unless the differences are substantial.

I exchange money on a daily basis, and I can't remember the last time I checked the exchange rate.

Chasing the best exchange rate around town is a fools game.

Is it only 20k now? Up to a year ago I was pulling 30k as it was their limit. The other limiting factor is the max per day/week on the card from your bank...Mine is $1000 CAD/day and 3000 a week...so Progreso's limit was less than mine. Luckily my fee was "only" $5 per transaction.

When you can think of yesterday without regret and tomorrow without fear, you are near contentment.
Your opinions are not my problem...

Sorry for my ignorance, but why would you use your atm card when you can just walk into the bank and exchange currency for pesos?

The only time I brought cash to the DR was in 2003 and I exchanged it all one day at 56 pesos to the $. I find the ATMs more convenient plus I travel around quite a bit when I am here and do not want to carry a bunch of cash.

You are correct on both counts, my limit is around 20,000 pesos and I believe it is a maximum of 30,000. My fee is $5 also plus most of the DR banks now charge an additional $3 on foreign account withdrawals.

Thumbs Up Re: 10/2004 - Current rate of exchange (Current Info)

    Thanks,

I forgot about the new $3 thingy, it was not in place when I was living there.

Re: 10/2004 - Current rate of exchange (Current Info)

Just did a quick check on www.xe.com and see where the dollar is now at 39.89 to the DOP. Despite a slow economy, the dollar continues to gain strength against the peso, unlike other countries where it has lost quite a bit of buying power in recent years.

Depending on where you live and what time of year, the cost of traveling there may have gone up, but once on the ground, can there be a better value for your vacation dollars than the DR? You might be hard pressed to find a better destination.

For someone with only a week or so to get away, grab a room in Sosua, BC, la Capital, Semana or wherever you choose, and have a great time. A piece of ass can be as cheap as a large all meat combo at Round Table!

Can't beat that with a sharp stick!

I think by the time most of you guys read this, it will be at 40. It has been going up almost every single day for the last few months.

Great, more chicas will be quoting in US dollars now. It seems to be the trend. "Cien dolares, cien dolares TLN Toro". How about dos mil pesos. "Ok es mismo Toro". jajaja. It's great when they quote US dollars and can't really count.

They don't have the slightest idea of what an "exchange rate" is, believe me.

That's what I said in the airport taxi thread, offer them 500 pesos when they are asking for $ 20 and you will probably find a taker.

Yes, the DR provides good bang for your buck. The only place close would be Mexico (TJ). You can fly into San Diego from the east coast for 300-400 dollars, stay an inexpensive motel for $40, and find chicas in the TJ "alley" for 200 pesos/16 dollars (ST). You will have to buy my book for more specifics on hotels, etc.

But Sosua provides a longer ST than the TJ quickie (20 minutes) and general GFE. In TJ if they do not know you FORGET about GFE (newbies get DOGGED in TJ and often pay extra just to see one tit!). Sosua is also much safer than TJ. So in the end I like them both but Sosua is just more relaxing and cleaner.
