this morning, the $ was 29.40 at banco de reservas, usually a good rate there, some freelancers may give more, but no more much.
DR is trying to balance between what is good for tourists (low peso) and what s good for our people here (high peso). we had a terrible inflation here: imported goods tripled their prices, and due to high gas prices, everything that is linked to transportation went up too. i wonder, how some dominican families still get along with their minimum salary? crime is more and more an issue, the more since christmas is near.
and even the chicas complain: a hundreter is no more a hundreter, lol.....

I guess from a monger's perspective, one has to adjust his maximum rate he is willing to pay for chica services.... And as chica's situation gets more desperate, they will accept....

I could, as a mongerer, live with 30:1 or so, as long as it remains consistant. MX is *11:1, and it still seems relatively affordable, although they are much more dollar based. What is bothersome, is that the prices for staples in DR are not dropping to reflect the change in the peso. So the chicas are making much less now in comparison to 40:1,as all those staples prices reflected the higher usd. If Lionel forces the peso down further, he is risking economic ruin in the tourism industry.

He will have effectively imposed a tax on tourism by cutting a deal with Chavez, the "wizard" of Venezuela for $200 million (U.S.) in petroleum...(payment deferred! :x ) in exchange for trying to smooth relations between Chavez (spawn of Fidel) and the Bush administration! Leonel IS constantly over here giving Gov. Bush "political head", but you'd have to be an idiot (like Chavez) to think Pres. Bush is going to give his socialist ass an audience because of a good word from Fernandez through his brother! Leonel is a crafty devil! He's switching from using the power companies as the nation's "lender" to good old dumb-ass Chavez! Now Chavez is gonna' be financing the DR while the lights burn brightly all across the country (the power outages are deliberately planned by the power companies in response to the
DR government's inability to pay them)! Couldn't happen to a nicer guy, too...soon we'll all be mongering in Venezuela! 8) "Viva Chavez, abajo Leonel!"
