    Another TV question

The last TV thread has been closed. So, I opened this one because of some new information I read on DR1. There is a current thread there that says you can now bring in a 32" or smaller TV duty and tax free. Is this true? I am coming back Christmas day and want to bring a Sony 31" flat screen. The other board says you can get a pamphlet from DR customs in Santo Domingo that outlines all duties on goods brought into the DR, including TV's by size. I looked on the DR customs web page and did not see anything that supported this. Does anyone know if the rules have indeed changed?

Do you live there or is it a present?

a few months back i brought a 32" flat screen into Santiago, I was charged 200 US duty, it was still cheaper than buying it there though, but make sure you can fit it in your suitcase , I bought one of those big tall duffle bags ( just for the TV ) and totally wrapped it in a blanket and bubble wrap before putting it into the bag

NONE of the airlines into the DR allow you to check in a box

the duty was calculated by the dominican customs agents, they look up the value by brand and model # , the they give you a bill, and at theat time they send you to the bank, cause they only take a certified bank check ( NO CASH )

Why would you pay tax on stuff that is with you and you are taking back to the States?

    Re: Another TV question

It is for my house. But will it make a difference to tell them it is a gift? I brought in a complete Sony stereo back in March 2008 (SDQ). I was questioned about it as I had declared it on the customs sheet prior to my arrival. I told the customs official (a woman) the stereo was a gift for a girlfriend. She smiled and waived me through. This was an expensive unit too.

Hey ChicaSeeka, how did they determine $200.00? Was it based on the price you paid for the TV? Also, from what you have said, I guess it is wishful thinking I could bag it and carry it on. I would hate to have to check it. I have a very hard side suitcase but it is 29". I guess I might have to purchase a 27".

they inspected it completely, taking down the model and make, and looked it up on the internet, to come up with a retail value... and charged me accordingly

I have to admit that when in DR I have things much more interesting to do than watching tv.

The shity TV I found in my hotels rooms are more than enough.

Moreover, I hate the chicas watching tv (novelas or cartoon!) when I fuck them.

The truth is, when you go for months at a time, you start to stay in more often.

Now until Jan 7 if you have your receipt you can bring down up to $US 2500 Duty Tax Free , but you can only bring 1 of each item .

This is the X-Mass gift the Gov gives to people every year.

    Hope this helps

You may be right , but from what i gather.... these days the airport is so busy it does not matter and there are many dominicans that travel as turistas cause the are US citizens.

But from what i was told it does not matter. the law applys to all
