How do you set up polls?

You can only set up a poll in a thread you yourself started. When you make your first post in the blank text box, scroll right down to the bottom and you will see this:

Post a Poll
Yes, post a poll with this thread (check the box here!)
Number of poll options: (Maximum: 25) enter the number of possible choices voters will have

Then "send" your post in the normal way.

At the next stage you will be guided on how to fill in the various voting options. I wish people would be more logical when doing this.

For example, good is:
a) Brazil
b) Colombia
c) other South American nations

Bad would be:
a) Brazil
b) South American
c) Colombia

as the options overlap.

You will also have the option of making the poll open or not. That is whether the way people voted is open for all to see.

You can also go back and add a poll to a thread you started later on after several posts but I am not sure if this option eventually expires. Someone please fill us in on this.

Nor can I! I went back to the last thread I started but that is so old now that the option to start a poll might have expired.

Nor can I now find the "how to do things" help pages. I haven't needed them since DT last reorganized the site.

I suggest you PM to Don Tomas, pasting in the URL of this thread. It would be good if he posted his answer here rather than a PM then we can all learn.

There is an option at the bottom when you set up a thread to include a Poll. You check that and submit, then you are taken to a screen to add options. After you created the thread ask a Moderator, like me and tell me what options you want and I will set it up for you.

Just to clarify, Kevy. Are you saying that a non-Mod can only set up a poll at the time they are making the opening post, but once the thread is active a poll can only be added by a moderator?

It is possible that if you started the thread, you could add a poll, by editing later on. . I haven't tested it, but given the difficulty for some members in starting a poll in the first place, I felt I should throw the offer out there

Regular users can do it. I just tested with Claudia.

You don't edit the post rather Hit the drop down menu "Thread Tools" on the first post. You will see "Add a Poll"

Just tried with three of my old threads but that option not present under "Thread Tools" (though others are). Does it expire after a certain length of time? My most recent thread-start is 7 weeks old.
