    Re: tourist card?

I have never understood why guys are so anxious to avoid buying this at POP. It costs the same wherever. Sure, you have to queue to buy it at POP, but then you have to wait for your luggage to clear which takes longer. Even if you have no checked luggage, the 2 to 5 minutes you have to queue must be quicker than making a special visit to the consulate or wherever in your own country. What am I missing here?

It was $10 to get into the DR and $20 to get out when I last visited this April/May. Any changes since?

Weyland you are very correct. for US airlines... $10 to get in and $0 to get out, since the exit fee is already in your plane ticket taxes.

Listen to weyland, and stand in a 2 minute line and have a $10 bill handy and all is well.

    PEACE

    Re: tourist card?

I bought one once at EWR in New Jersey it did not really make much of a difference.I wish I had some extra Immigration forms though so I could have them already made out though.

    Re: tourist card?

Continental offers to sell you one when your checking your luggage, not sure about other airlines. Same cost everywhere - $10usd

The line to buy the tourist card at pop doesn't take long. Even if there are two flights coming in at once, your only in line for a couple minutes.

I will give you a check-in hint tho - If you come across a people bottleneck in the airport right after entering the building, they have this new scam going where they have chicas dressed in some kind of traditional garb and a photographer taking pics of the chicas with each tourist. And they do this just around a corner so you can't see what's going on up ahead so everybody calmly waits. It causes this huge people jam. And You know us americans, were so polite & orderly, so we wait.

Just push your way through this stupid throng of people, elbowing dressed up chicas and gringa tourists while screaming "NO SOY UN PENDEJO - NO SOY UN TOURISTO"

    Re: tourist card?

To and from UK we not only have to fill out the immigration form (which is handed out on the plane so we can do it during the flight) but now a dumbass customs form both on entering and leaving which mainly repeats all the info on the immigration form. Again, no problem to me because I have to wait much longer than that for my checked baggage. But have a ballpoint pen ready as there are none at the airport desks.

Do you guys from North America have to fill out those as well? I guess so

Yes - and your right about carrying a pen. That is always one of things I make sure I have on me when flying down.

The Jet Blue counter at JFK! But i think there's a surcharge. It's not worth it and it doesn't save you any time.

Newark had a $1 surcharge at the Continental counter last time I purchased one also.

I always thought no problem standing in line for 5 minutes for the tourist card but on 2 ocassions this has been a problem for me. Once in Santiago the line was VERY long due to a lot of inbound flights at the same time. Same thing happened in POP once also.

300-400 people in that small line took at least 90 minutes to get my card. By the time I got through customs I thought my luggage was lost as nothing was left on the belt.

Someone finally told me they pulled the last few pieces of luggage and put them on the side since they needed that spot for another plane coming in soon.

Do I buy my tourist card in advance now? Not usually unless I have a lot of spare time after checking in. For $1 extra I know I have the card before I land. Also its always a good idea to bring a pen for filling out the forms they hand you while still on the plane.
    Jimmy owes me a dollar!

    EXACTLY,
    that what i thought too,
while youre checking your luggage you pay $1 more and you are SET.
Why would you stand in line in DR like a schmuck to save a $1 ??

Thanks, this was the kind of info I was looking for in regard to the card. I'm taking continental so I'll just get it out of the way at EWR.

    Much appreciated!!!

Thanks guys for the info. Leaving on Thursday, so sounds like buying the card in the US saves some time.

    Re: tourist card?

Back in my traveling days, I always bought two or three tourist cards to have extras, or I'd buy them at the departure terminal, to avoid the lines.

I never checked baggage, so I would not be waiting for luggage either.

A couple of other tips: Always try to get a seat closest to the exit of the plane, so you're one of the first ones off.

Try to get bulkhead or emergency exit seats... more legroom.
If you think it's love try not paying in the morning..

Only problem with booking those seats is that if a jackass with mega miles like me comes along with Platinum status and 250k plus miles elite miles a year you will get bumped back when we try to get upgraded to first class and if it is full with one of the hand full of free upgrade certificates I have always they will have to give me the next best thing without even using the upgrade. I always recommend my friends to book the next row for example on a airbus out of MIA with 4 rows of 1st class book row 6 so you don't get sent from row 5 to row 30. At least that is how it works with NWA/Delta and American I can't speak for other airlines as I don't need any other airline except local commuters.
