Pact paves way for yellow taxis to convert to natural gas

SANTO DOMINGO. - The natural gas supply company SGN and the drivers grouped in the union Conatra signed an agreement to convert their yellow taxis to use natural gas, which would lower their operating costs.
On Monday Conatra affirmed that natural gas use will lead to substantial savings for drivers, since according to technicians a distance covered with 800 pesos worth of propane gas, would cost only 200 with natural gas, which will also lower taxi fares.
To convert a vehicle to natural gas costs 1,285 dollars, and with the agreement drivers pay an initial 7,500 pesos, and 770 for 52 weeks.
In February Conatra and the National District City Council (ADN) received 700 yellow taxis, the first part of a fleet of 3,000.

I don't know if this will pan out with lower fares, but it should as it would be a step in the right direction to being tourist friendly. Also the cabbies could still make a higher wage even with the reduced fare according to the M.P.G. figures here.

Also less pollution. I've got to admit the Dominicans surprised me with this one.

It would seem to make more sense long-term to use ethanol from sugar cane like they do in Brazil.

Taxi fares won't go down, you can bet the bank on that. They've been converting the cars over for some time now.

I don't know what's up with the pic though, there ain't no 2 door taxis..
If you think it's love try not paying in the morning..

Great initiative, but where do you get your vehicle refilled? I don't recall most gas station being outfitted with a natural gas (or propane) supply.

Natural gas dispensing stations are being built throughout the city.

Let the Taxi driver worry about that. I don't believe you'll be driving a natural gas equipped vehicle here anytime soon.

What would the cost be with a cab using gasoline? Did not think that there was a difference between propane and natural gas for cars.

Colombia and Thailand use natural gas for most of their taxis. It works there. In Toronto some use Natural gas as well. It is cheaper.
