Businessman Salomon Rizek Llabaly has made news with his plans to purchase the State Sugar Council (CEA) Haina River Mill lands for a pittance. Reportedly, the contract establishes that the government would sell 14,336,039.79 square meters for RD$34,474,992, with a RD$3.6 million downpayment for Gestiones Rodajes S.A. and the remainder in 10 years. The contract was originally signed by Victor Manuel Baez in 2003 under the Hipolito Mejia administration.
Huchi Lora, of the Huchi y el Equipo radio program, says the authorization of the sale by Congress is another example of major corruption in Congress and the government for the privileged sales conditions and the extreme undervaluation of their worth. He explained the bill is promoted in Congress by PRD deputy Neney Cabrera. The property is located in Monte Plata.
