President Leonel Fernandez welcomed his Colombian counterpart-to-be, President-elect Juan Manuel Santos to his office yesterday evening where they discussed bilateral diplomatic relations, crime and drug trafficking. Fernandez also met with Colombian Foreign Minister-designate Maria Angela Holguin. After the meeting, which lasted for about 40 minutes, Santos gave a short press conference at the Presidential Palace's Orlando Martinez Hall. Vice President Rafael Alburquerque, Foreign Relations Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, and Colombian Ambassador in the DR, Mario Montoya also attended the meeting with Santos.
Santos chose not to answer any questions about some of the major issues currently on the table, preferring to wait until his inauguration on 7 August. He said, however, that there was enormous potential for cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Colombia in tackling drug trafficking and crime. Santos praised the role played by Leonel Fernandez in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.
President Fernandez is expected to attend the inaugural in Bogota.
