Over a year ago, President Leonel Fernandez broke ground on the refurbishment project of part of Duarte Avenue that is to become Santo Domingo's official "Chinatown". However, the project is well behind schedule. According to a report by Diario Libre, the RD$200 million project is inching its way along a time-schedule that had been planned for completion over six months ago. The president of the Duarte Avenue Business Association, Manolito Fernandez says that the Ministry of Public Works has not made the corresponding disbursement of funds. Once completed, Chinatown will be located along Duarte Avenue between Teniente Amado Garcia St. and Mella Avenue.
