    BILLIE HOLIDAY

For any of the Jazz cats out there, WKCR 89.9 fm in New York is running a "Billie Holiday Festival" on the radio. They are about to be shut down so they're trying to raise funds to keep this jazz station alive. They are playing every record and interview she has ever done. It's running 24/7 until april 16th.

"Strange Fruit" is still haunting after all these years. I think I'll try to log on myself.

One of her favorites. The song, as you already know, is about the horror of "lynching". Her label at the time would not allow her to record it because it would upset the southern market. So they gave her a limited release from her contract just to let her record it on a small independent label.
