Apostropheman, I was only kidding. I don't take myself so seriously. Happy New Year.

Spending a little bit more money isn't going to prevent you from getting robbed in Latin America. It can happen to anyone. In fact, my first impression of MDE is that I'll be more likely to get robbed walking around Poblado than other supposedly more dangerous parts of town.

That could be very true. Poblado is very dangerous, for some, at times.

But hanging out at the bus terminal in Santiago at 4am could be dangerous.

Oh - I completely agree with you there. Transit centers are always the worst when it comes to petty crime, especially pickpocketting.

Saving money, but sacrificing safety, is a recipe for disaster.

Keep in mind that at that point, he will have all his cash and passport with him, so if he gets robbed, he has nada.

Question Re: Cab Share Jan 15th 3:00 AM

Are you saying that taking a taxi from the airport in Santiago or going to a cabaņa or taking Metro or Caribe Tours buses is dangerous?

I never called him cheap, but if I did, you will find that post for me.

You've done all of that, and more as have I and dozens of others here without any issues.

Of course some of us have also been robbed and worse but that shit is thankfully few and far between and ;largely not something normally or easily preventable....at least in my experience.

If you land in Santiago and grab a taxi, you know the names of the cabanas and you know where they are and how they operate so if the taxi goes off in the wrong direction, you know.

Right, but I never recommended he hang out around probably abandoned bus station at 4 AM. There are plenty of other places he can go.

Since he never been there, how will he know the taxi is not ripping him off or if he is heading in the wrong direction?

I'm not following your logic. The same could also happen if he takes a taxi directly to Sosua.

He has to get in a taxi in either scenario.

Re: Cab Share Jan 15th 3:00 AM

Ok, I'm going to give you the first sane answer. Here's what you do....

Grab a cab at the airport taxi stand and tell him you want:
    a) a couple of cute chicas
    b) a cabana close by
    c) his phone number so you can use him during your trip (just don't tell him you're going to the bus station in the morning) This will put him somewhat in your court

In the morning, call your cabbie, lose the chicas, get breakfast, and have him drop you at the bus station. Busses leave like every 30 minutes, so it don't matter what time you get there.

Trust me, that's a great plan.

Not really. He will get one from the dispatcher and go.

An intelligent person would ask the pertinent questions and not endanger themselves...or carry all their funds on them. ATM's are pretty reliable in the DR, some exceptions noted.

No one suggested arriving that early before the termional opens...cabaņas were suggested

Anywhere you or most other guys have been to is just as doable for others. It's not like we have another Christopher Colombus amongst us, though some might like to think they are...

Not sure that blindly taking other's suggestions is all that smart. If they are qualified and you know this that's another story but many prefer to do their own thin. This is not deep in the jungle or anything. Most guys could manage, they just choose not to for the most part.

Oh, not saying YOU called him cheap but it sure was implied by some...like being smart with money is stupid or a crime...

And who would have ever thought that someone we know would have been kidnapped in DR.

A man can only be killed once in his life.
