Re: 07/2007 - Continental Deals to the DR.

All my trips from EWR to POP have been fairly cheap. I used to just find a cheap flight and book it.

The two times I had to pick specific dates, the tickets were stupid high.
Once it was 891 and just a few weeks ago it was 791!!!
Both of those trips I used miles. 60k and 100bucks for firstclass RT.

the trick is to NOT plan dates. Just search a few months out and book when you see a super cheap ticket.
Out of all those cheap flight, I was upgraded to first class for free on everyone one. So no need to buy a first class ticket.

i can say that before the merger, the ticket prices never included the bullshit 143 additional in taxes and fees. So when you ran the ticket through it would show up with the higher price.
Now, post merger, all prices include taxes and fees. So while it may look like higher overall prices, it is about the same

This is exactly how I book.
I use the fare calendar, and just look month by month for good prices.

Also..Not to quibble....but just to clarify.
The prices with the included taxes has nothing to do with the merger.

The government passed new regulations a while back forcing the airlines to show the total fare including all taxes and fees...to cut down on the "false" advertising of low fares.

That makes sense. It just seemed to happen around merger time

Re: 07/2007 - Continental Deals to the DR.

I've tried using the fare calendar, but it seems to me that the best fare posts within 6-8 weeks before my desired trip and then that fare may stay the same for a few more weeks. Anything more than 8 weeks out always seems too high. Right now everything for September look high, but I expect the fare to drop in the next week--at least I'm hoping it will so I can book for Sept. 8th.

Also, if you compare to the JetBlue price from JFK and the JB price is hundreds lower, it means that the EWR/United price will be dropping soon. I've almost always paid the same on Continental/United as JB just by waiting a few weeks from the time the price dropped on JB.

I know JFK is further from Newark, but if they are the same price, I would take JFK - more leg room, free snacks and a free checked bag. Plus T5 at JFK is one of the best around.

Last year, the price of flights to the DR were much lower in September and October. I think waiting a bit is a good strategy.

Very true. United isn't trying to give shit for free in the way of snacks now and the extra leg room is cool even though I'm not a tall dude really. About half the time I will fly down from JFK becaise I can go straight from work, but coming home it's a pain in the ass for me so I try to fly r/t from EWR. I get about the same fare when I buy 2 one-way tickets so that's a non factor.

Re: 07/2007 - Continental Deals to the DR.

I cannot count how many times i have flown United/Continental to POP from EWR
and on every flight I was upgraded to business. Infact when my buddy from Boston would fly into EWR and meet me, he was upgraded as well both ways. So as far as leg room? It was never an issue.

the trick is finding the cheapie flights. Find the month you are thinking, use the calender and just keep putting in different amount of days for your trip. The price changes depending on how many days, even if you are leaving on the same day

I just took a quick look and it seems there are NO MORE flight after mid August??? How the hell is that possible?

All flights at least in September are on Saturday. I've been looking at a Sept 8-15 trip. Only 1 time did I get upgraded. All the other times they were paying people to give up their seats and fly the next day with a free upgrade. Who knows with United/CO.

that is a very IMPORTANT Point... if in fact you are saying what I think you are saying ??

cause us Jet Blue guys have been brainwashed and are not used to that, cuz they do it ONE ticket LEG at a time, and you can CHANGE your departure day lets say , but the Return ticket LEG price for that day, on the day you book, is the price.. and Vice Versa..
The one way price does NOT change just cause you plug in a Different dates for the other Leg.

In fact as we discussed on other threads, the other Leg of the ticket may even be on another AIRLINE..

Not so much a deal as a fare drop... The United EWR-POP route is finally dropping back to normal levels $411 r/t flights starting around the 9th of January. Sure beats the $480+ it's been for all of 2012. Expect JetBlue to follow suit (they almost always fare-match each other on flights to POP).

Overall 2012 has been a shit year for airfares. Here's hoping this is just a sample of things to come in 2013.

Weekend special on United for EWR-SDQ this weekend for a Saturday departure returning Monday or Tuesday - $271 r/t all taxes included. You can also get it for 25k miles (usually 35k) but since you'd still have to pay $140 in taxes it's a much better deal to buy it outright (25k miles to save $130? fuck that!). Nice price for a weekend run.

Re: 07/2007 - Continental Deals to the DR.

a bus from SDQ to the Su is about 3-4 hours??

My biuddy backed out of Egypt or Peru, so i will hit the Su again, if it was at that price
I was trying to make this happen. But only way is a 3 day trip.
leaving Sat is $271, all other are higher

I would head back if I could get 10-12 days at that price. It would be worth sitting on that bus round trip wasting a day

i guess i will keep looking

Great deal for a weekend getaway

Maybe the thread title should be changed from 'Continental' to 'United'?

    Anyway...

    FINALLY!

A legit drop on airfares on the EWR-POP route, and in high season no less.

$382 r/t on United, many dates from January through April.
