Public Taxi's on the main road.

A tourist taxi from Sosua to the airport wants $18 - $20. I took a public taxi from Sosua and it then dropped my girl back off in Sosua for 300 pesos. These guys have come down in prices. A Tourist taxi wants $45 to go out to Puerto Plata and hang at the clubs a few hours. A oublic taxi wanted only 600 ($21.00) -800 ($28.00) pesos.

Do not get pushed around by the tourist taxi thieves.

I walked over to the taxi stand on Sunday to rerturn to the airport. I was going to use the public taxis, but the guys at the taxi stand agreed to 300 pesos, so it paid to do a little walking. If they pick you up at the hotel, it is tougher to negoiciate.

still 20 US, You might want to try walking out to the main road to catch the public taxi. If enough guys do that, then they will drop the price.

Wait for $15 or stay home for nothing, $15 is worth the wait.

Yeah, the guy did not look unhappy about the 15 I gave him.

i have a friend picking me up a STi. not sure what it's gonna cost as he just asked me to cover the costs. i'm guessing gas, lunch and beverages. still cheaper and a lot more fun the a taxi!

Times are really tough there now. A taxi from STI can be as low as 1,500.

true but that's still over $50. i'm guessing more in the range of $20. don't care thought it saves me a huge hassle and waste of time getting to heaven. rather give it to a friend than a bandito

Gas is $3.30 a gallon these days so your friend will use aboyt $12 in gas.
A taxi charging as low as $40 still makes good money.

When you see one dropping off people you quickly lowball the guy and tell him that you know he has to leave empty so hurry up and make up his mind.

The Publis taxi was 10 pesos to Sosua at the mian highway. I can't see it being more than 50 to Costamber, but it is a long walk from the main highway. Negociate and you could get 200-300 pesos.

200 is fair since they need to leave empty.

    Actually more then that Jimmy...

Gas is RD$101.9 aka 102 for regular in Santiago.
    Rate at 29-1 = US$3.52 per gallon!

Now to top it off if they have a SUV, hopefully they do one can expect 15-20 mpg. I know I normally drive a Honda CRV which should get 23/29. I am damn lucky to get 17 mpg in the DR. Climbing the mountains, stop and go traffic, no true highway speeds (60+ mph), etc.

    Going the highway route Santiago to Sosua is 88km or 55miles. That's 110 r/t at 18 mpg is 6.1 gallons X US$3.52 that's US$21.51 in gas alone!!!

I am sure even the Honda and Toyota cars get at best 22mpg down there!

Ok the Puerto Plata airport is about 1/4 mile from the main road. There is a gate and the parking lot is smallish. You can walk the 800 feet or so from the customs area to the parking lot gate. There are motos there sometimes. If you want a public taxi or guaguayou will need to walk the remaining 1/4 mile to the main road.
