Airlines Air France and Jet Blue have requested the assistance of the police and security at the Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo, due to theft and violations of passengers' luggage that has been plaguing them in recent weeks.
The manager of Air France resigned his post yesterday, after the Criminal Investigation Department of Police questioned 14 airport employees about the theft of various items from the French aircraft.
The Sales and Customer Service Manager, Mary Esther Calleja, told reporters that the company's owners were concerned about theft of objects and jewelery they have in their aircraft for sale to passengers. The thefts usually occur at the time of the cleaning of aircraft. Calleja said it was not employees of Air France carrying out the thefts.
Last week Jet Blue also asked for help after allegations by dozens of passengers that their luggage was violated and their belongings stolen. Both companies sent letters to the Chief of the Airport, Aristides Fernandez Zucco, to make him aware of the situation.
Insecurity and crime have increased in recent days around the Las Americas airport. This week the perimeter fence on the side of La Caletastole was stolen, while fifteen people claimed that they were assaulted on the way back from the airport to Santo Domingo and San Pedro de Macoris or upon reaching their homes.

I guess they had to provide a higher level of security with a fence at their own homes to prevent the criminal element from home invasions and ripping off their stolen airport goods!
