Well that sounds more like a shakedown, than the politur not not knowing they are the girls who sell CD's to tourists. I mean seriously ,WE even know them as the CHICAS WHO SELL the CD's . . But its a valid point, its grossly unfair...and unjust..to treat them that way.
On the beach its now illegal to Sell certain items, like those wood carvings, we saw some confiscated. Not sure the exact reasons. Competition maybe with the legit vendors? Why someone would carry a large a large wood carving around on the beach all day for a possible sale, is a whole other issue.

Of course the Politur guys know who is who.

The girls that sell CD's? The CD are pirated. Anyone here think they're selling genuine CD's?

Politur occasionally targets hookers, but they also go after folks selling counterfeit cigars too.

Now, the wood carvings? I haven't got an idea, unless they are using wood for their statues that come from protected trees. (there's lots of them)

I don't think politur gives a rat ass about pirated CD's/DVD's. I mean, I am sure almost every Dominican knows the CD's/DVD's are pirated.

Apparently there is a factory in Santiago that mass copies these CD's/DVD's. The factory is even equipped to copy the CD/DVD packaging .

Doesn't appear as if there is much of a copyright infringement law in the DR, and if there is..........................nobody seems to abide by it .

I'm not going to bore you with all the articles that appear regularly in local papers about businesses getting busted for using pirated copies of Windows, or the dozens of times that counterfeit articles including CD's, Cigars, perfumes, purses and other things have been seized and destroyed, along with the accompanying required pictures of it all being burned or crushed being published as well.

I can tell you it happens pretty much on a monthly basis.

The girls selling CD's in Sosua are not grabbed for prostitution - everybody knows they're not prostitutes.

The next time you see them, ask them how many times they've had their CD's confiscated. You may be surprised.

For them, it's just part of the business.

The industry makes billions every year --Hold on let me get a tissue --I feel so bad for the music and movie industry===I read an interview once with Jackie Gleason--the interviewer asked him why he never sued cartoon giant Hanna-Barbera for basically doing the flinstones cartoon which was really "the Honeymooners"(his tv show) in a cartoon version. He said to paraphrase --I have great life and all the money I'll ever need---He was content not greedy like most in that industry are---

I don't know about that. One of CD vendedoras told me that they are assigned their routes in Sosúa by the politur. She also told me that they have to obtain a vendors' license to sell the CD's/DVD's.

It doesn't make a difference to me either way, as I have found most of the DVD's I bought from them are of poor audio and/or visual quality, and some of the DVD's have been blank or were not of the content that they were supposed to be.

For example, I bought the DVD "Girl of Bonao". I was expecting to see the hot Dominicana on the cover of the DVD, but the chicas in the vid were mainstream American porn actresses.

So, I just stopped buying from them.

Miggs, you are comparing Jackie Gleason to Dominican artists such as Joe Veras, Raulin Rodriguez, Luis Miguel de Amargue, Frank Reyes, Bibieron El Secreto etc.

I am sure these artists give a rats ass that they are not getting proceeds from the pirating of their CD's.

Point well taken. DAS. I'm speaking mainly about the industry in general. And I'm sure the artist's you mentioned are losing $$ because of the pirating but they could always rent chairs on the beach in Sosua or Boca Chica to supplement their income due to the priacy, Or even better sing with the MARIACHI BROS on the beaches ! Yea that the ticket!
