BLOG - Life in a DR Barrio

This blog is fantastic! Once I started reading I could not stop. You have to start at the beginning (May 2011) and work your way forward. Read from the bottom of the page up to the top to stay in cronilogical order.

Here is the heading from the blog:

Blog is built of true stories, observations and personal essays about life in a poor barrio in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. While it is written in the first person, the narrator remains in the background and lets the characters, who are primarily members of his family and are Dominican, and the events that unfold around him sustain the narrative which ranges from funny to frightening.

Re: BLOG - Life in a DR Campo

I don't remember exactly when I became aware of it (some time early last year) but have kept up on it since. A nice insight into life that we don't see every day, even when we are there. There have been some really interesting stories along the way.

Thanks for drawing our attention to this. But why have you headed your thread "in a DR campo"?

Years ago he used to post his adventures on DR1 then he rolled his posts into a blog a couple of years ago. Definetly not the campo though.

It's an interesting read for sure, but that guy is surrounding himself with the worst kind of element you can be associated with in DR.

Re: BLOG - Life in a DR Barrio

I've read several pages of this mans blog so far and I'm beginning to wonder why any man would tolerate the level of chaos surrounding him as he does? He lives in a barrio with some dangerous and shady persons. He enjoined himself to a Dominican woman who can't read or write with 4 children of which if memory serves 2 are grown. The woman is a widow from a man who fathered over 30 "outside" children while they were married. Why would any self-respecting man do this? I can understand the sex and all but this woman is stressed the fuck out half the time and the other time is spent cleaning and mopping floors. Meanwhile, he states at one point that if he were not there the whole family would literally starve. He must know that due to the families dire economic circumstances that his only purpose for their toleration of him is his money. He will always be named, Gringo. The outsider.

He either sees himself as a Capt. Save type or or a victim of his own insecurity. Mind you this is all taking place in the barrio where the lights aren't on half the time, the potable water is delivered by truck and unsanitary conditions abound.

This blog makes me reconsider ex-patting to the DR or anywhere else. I'll be damned if I get to a point in my life where I can retire only to live in a foreign land where I have to take care of the woman I'm fucking along with her entire brood moochers and extended family. Men have got to start thinking better of themselves. I hope the reason he no longer posts is because he looked back at his writing and realized just how insane it is. Perhaps he got some sense and decided to move on. Let's hope.

I think the narrator probably died. His website doesn't seem to be available. He sounds very sick in that last blog entry. The guy seems to get a kick out of his own suffering.

The blog is good reading. His dispassionate style only heightens the macabre stuff.

He's alive. A couple of months ago folks on DR1 were asking about his whereabouts and he posted that all was good.

Good I'm glad to hear that. Guess he ran out of stories to tell.
