    Heineken buys Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana

    From Sosua News

    http://www.sosuanews.com/index.php?id=2932&article=1

Friday, April 13, the Dutch brewer 'Heineken' took over the Dominican brewer 'Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana' which brings the well-known brand 'Presidente' on the market. With the acquisition an amount of 1.6 billion dollars changes hands. Of these 1.6 billion $ 300 million has to be handed over to the Dominican government as a tax contribution. The company Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana brings next to the famous Presidente beer also Presidente Light, Bohemia, Bohemia Light, The One, Corona, Brisa, Miller and Miller 64 on the Dominican market. The spokesman of Heineken reassured the staff that there will not be any layoffs and for now no changes are expected for the workforce.
On the contrary, as expected, the production of national beers Presidente and Bohemia will increase now because of the advantage of the global distribution network of Heineken.

Does that now mean Presidente and Bohemia will have a "piss water" version of their beer?? Heineken's around the World taste different depending on where you buy it.

Oh yes indeed. Although I'd guess they've made much more than that over the years selling Presidente.

That should put them right up there with the Vicinis..

I gotta think they passed the Vicinis about 20 years ago. The worldwide sugarcane market went to shit. Leon Jimenes has been printing money with cigarettes and beer. LJ's profits were over $600 Million last year.

Of course, no one really knows all the shit the Vicinis own, but based just on sugarcane, I gotta think they've taken a big hit.

This certainly is strange. There isn't anything on either Heineken or AB/Inbev website indicating that the sale has been determined and the last word from Reuters was that AB/Inbev was the leading bidder at $9M more than the competition.

The NY Times and WSJ don't know about it, but it's in the Sosua News?

The only other place I could find recent info is in another Caribbean paper.

BTW Heineken already owns 9.3% of CND so it's a win-win for them either way.

This is the last one I found from Listin Diario. It says that Anheuser Busch put in an offer for $2.5 Billion. If that's true, the Leon family might just buy the whole country.

Here's the link from WSJ http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...view_wsjlatest

    And from Diario Libre http://www.diariolibre.com/economia/...residente.html

Diario Libre has it going at $3.5Billion. Which means that no one knows what the fuck they're talking about yet (2 companies mentioned, 3 different prices).

I dont normally Drink beer but when I do I prefer PRESIDENTE FROM THE ISLAND, Either that or i'll stay thirsty my friends.

Presidente from the island tastes like Lemonade its so rich in flavor, when you get an ice cold one its a wonderful and refreshing feeling to say the leastt.

I hear the reason it tastes different in the states is because of allowable alcohol levels are different in US and DR. Not sure if thats true but thats the reason I heard for the taste difference.

OK, think I found it. I'd bet it came from here....

Elsiglo21 has run two articles on the 11th and 12th.

The 11th said it was Heineken,

the 12th said it was AB that outbid them...

I just hope that if this is actually true, eventually I'll be able to go to my local booze superstore and pick up some Presidente out here in NorCal.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a slight (but hopefully barely discernable) taste difference in exported Presidentes as opposed to the stuff made for the locals, I'll still buy it given an opportunity.

I have had many European friends, especially Irish, who have told me that Guiness brewed for consumption in Ireland taste a bit different (meaning better) from Guiness brewed for export. But I have never been to a pub in Dublin, so I wouldn't know.

Re: Heineken buys Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana

    And now it's official: http://www.diariolibre.com/noticias/...gociacion.html

Looks like the official entity is AmBev Brasil (the Latin American division of Anheuser Busch). They're buying 42% of Cerveceria Dominicana for $1 Billion and have to buy out Heineken's 9% to get 51% of the company. Looks like a win-win for the Leon family. They get a billion dollars and keep 49% of the company going forward. Hopefully, Presidente becomes a brand distributed by Budweiser and will be just as ubiquitous within 2 or 3 years.

This explains the recent shortage of Presidente over the last 6 months in the US. It was being distributed by Miller. If they were negotiating with Budweiser, I'm sure that a condition of the deal was that Miller stop distribution of Presidente in the US.

Now Brahma and Presidente have the same Daddy.

Nothing will change except the distribution. The Dominican partners will make billions off their 49%. The Presidente exported to the outside World will still taste a little funny and its availability will be universal. The US will soon see Presidente on draught at Hooters. Now, if they could only send a few of those Dominican Hooters' Chicas....
