It's like Trey said, it's a captive market. Charge what the market will bear.

Every fly from San Juan to Santo Domingo? I think it's more than NY to SD. Why? Nobody else but AA did that route forever.

My friend that owns the ferry between PR and DR could move people for free, because all the money he makes on cargo.

So what does he do? He moves people on the ferry for a little less than the flight. TONS of Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and tourists looking for savings are more than happy to pay the lower fare, and spend the night in the casino.

Did you know you can buy a cabin-less ticket on the ferry? Just spend the night gambling.

The guy is laughing all the way to the bank.

Re: Santo Domingo vs POP airport

Quick question. I'm looking at a Jet Blue flight on July 10 from St. Thomas that gets in to SDQ at 11:21pm. Are there taxi operators in the airport that hour of the night or do I need to arrange for a taxi to pick me up from the airport? I am thinking to spend the night in a cabana in the San Isidro area vs a hotel because of the hugh price difference. Then I want to catch either the 7am or 11am metro bus to Sosua.

Help me. when you say huge price difference, what are you referring to? Hotel? Taxi?

Nope, he's flying in from St. Thomas. I reread his post, and he specified Hotel prices.

Given that, he's better off coming into the city and staying at a cheap hotel, instead of sleeping in a cabana in San Isidro. He'd probably end up paying for 2 four hour slots, and that puts him into cheap SD hotel range.

Plus, detouring over to San Isidro is gonna cost him more any way.

That my friend was a spelling error. Huge is what I meant to spell. Ok What i meant was the price difference between a cabana vs. the price of a hotel for the night. Well when ya look at it the savings are not all that huge but its still few bucks saved that I can use to pay the taxi in the morning to the Metro station.

Actually MrHappy in the past when I checked into a cabana at any time after 11pm, the price you pay is for up until 11am the next day. Any time you check into one before 11pm the price you pay is for only 4 hours. I stayed in several of the cabanas before in the San Isidro area such as La Oficina, Ta Jevi, Happy City and it was the samething up until a year ago. Do you think the rules has changes since then?

If I'm not mistaken, there will be taxis at the airport as long as there are flights coming in. I once got into STI at 3am, and there were plenty of taxis because they'd heard our flight was delayed. I can't imagine SDQ not being just as organized.

I don't think the taxi mafia at SDQ would let a plane land, and they not have taxi's waiting.

Like DC and TNT says if a flight is coming in the taxis will be there, but you will be paying a premimum price for them, cause you won't have too many other options.

I can't help ya there, brother. I haven't done an over night in a cabana in many, many moons. But I would venture to guess things haven't changed.

Well I feel comfortable now knowing that taxis will be there. I never flew in to SDQ that late before. I've also heard so much about robberies etc...
I am glad that the Government is making steps to improve this. Read the news below courtesy of www.dr1.com

Special Police and military unit for Las Americas Highway

Speaking at a press conference on Friday 15 June, General Lodwing Suardi Correa, Police commander for eastern Santo Domingo, and Carlos Cota Lama, the government's representative at Las Americas International Airport announced the creation of a unit that will operate 24 hours to protect travelers from the airport to Santo Domingo. They said the unit will have the men and equipment needed to prevent robberies and will launch an intelligence operation to detect suspected insiders who are leaking information on travelers who declare cash upon arrival. "Plainclothes men will be working on the intelligence aspect to detect the criminals and there will be men in uniform in the operational part," said General Suardi Correa upon making the announcement of the special highway security surveillance force. The US Embassy recently issued a warning to its citizens in the DR of robberies from the Las Americas Airport to the city at night.

How often do buses leave? Im assuming cabs can take you also but im guessing its not as convenient. Dont mind me, im just asking so i have all info correct. Also here that there are much prettier women in the capital. Is it worth it to stay there for a night before leaving? Are the nightclubs around or close to airport with hotel access like Sosua? Please advise, help me out fellas.
noticed it was the infamous tony the tiger that started this thread.......the guy that stiffed Rockies......
he was looking for all kinds of advice and we were nice enuff to give him some......
he was too cheap to subscribe and find all the info on the site on his own.......so he used us.....
and then he used Rick at Rockies by stiffing him on 6 units he had reserved........
    what a piece of work.......

That is as 100% accurate as one could possibly get.
..pretty much would be equivalent to saying if you made it rain with $20 bills on Pedro C in front of Classicos, on a Hot summer Friday night , will there be enough chicas there to bend down even with their high heels on to pick up the money ?.

Not only that, but you could see the type of guy he was and his crew were right away, everyone has speculated that these guys called Rick's place ghetto because they were used to so much more, but in reality, they were too cheap to pay a few extra bucks to fly directly to POP, and was looking for the cheapest way out right from the start. Still would like to know where they ended up staying, as it has become obvious, as his actions and motives have been closer examined, these guys doubled or maybe tripled booked, and was looking for the cheapest way out, not the highest end way out (their comments made you think that Rick's place was beneath them, less then what they was used to, but they were looking for the cheapest way out right from the start, the reason they flew into Santiago instead of PoP right from the start), as their comments would leave you to believe.

true.....they didn't want to pay $50 a piece per unit which would have been $300 total for 6........
so they probably found 2 three bedroom villas via a driver and tried to save a couple dollars......
being the cheapstakes they are and the ghetto comment was just an excuse or smoke screen.......
they probably live in the ghetto back home where they are use to stiffing even their friends......lol

years ago I had a prospective tenant stop by in his $100 shit box of car that he was probably living in.......
to look at unit I just nicely remodeled and the guy was a broke ass and needed a place to live.......
when he heard what the rent was he made the ghetto comment too.....just an excuse cause he couldn't afford it

why not stay in the city..catch hotel near waterfront...I have stayed at Razor hotel...$50 a night...short walk to 305 for some fine chicas...only a 200 peso ride to the metro bus station...there are other area hotels for about the same price..
    hope this helps...
