    United fares to the DR

Since taking over Continental Airlines, United has lost their damned minds. I've been looking at some fares (Delta was 400+, Jet Blue 500+) and, just for the hell of it, looked at United.

And this is the cheapest fare for an economy flight.

Who the hell in their right mind is going to pay double for a fare, and take a 45 hour one way flight for what is, normally, a 3 1/2 hour flight?

You are choosing departure and return dates just a week or so out. Try a date 60 or 90 days out and see what the price is. The closer to a travel date you try to make flight arrangements, the more it will cost.

That is normally the case with every airline.

Oops. I didn't see a return date when I looked at the itinerary more closely. That price is just one way?

Fuck, it's late and I'm hitting the rack.

Yeah, I understand that, but the Delta and JB flights were also priced for the same dates and came back with much lower fares and flight times.

No, that price is RT, but it's still 45 hours one way.

What bright side? I'd be much better off paying $500 for another trip.

I agree, even if you book months in advance, there's been a huge hike in prices from a year ago. It's starting to make more sense to fly to Santiago or SDQ.

I strongly believe prices to SDQ & STI will begin to creep higher with more demand. FUCK!

Re: United fares to the DR

United doesn't fly to STI, that's also part of the issue. If you try to book any UA flight to STI it'll be with a partner airline like Copa and you're going to have at least one stopover. If you want to get a good price into STI from NY you pretty much have to fly out of JFK, I don't think anyone flies direct to STI from EWR.

Flight prices into POP are ridiculous, though. Not just UA, but all carriers out of NY. STI, SDQ prices are as good as I've ever seen this year, but flights to POP have pretty much been $480+ all year.

Re: United fares to the DR

Things are tough all over. Looking 6 weeks out I'm seeing prices more than $100 more than the flight I booked for next week, 6 weeks ago. I don't think the Summer price breaks will show up until after Memorial Day weekend. Probably something to do with uncertainty about fuel prices. The prices will fall again in a couple of weeks. A lot of people are just staying put this Summer.

What all of you guys have said is true, but I guess my main point is that with a fare at $1,000 and the route they're flying, why don't they just give up the damned route. I can't believe ANYONE would fly this route.

I have taken to flying to STI my last 2 trips and will continue to do so.

that's kinda the point - it's not their route! basically, you're taking (at minimum) two completely different flights - a United flight to one destination and then a Copa (or some other partner) flight to STI. You can find the itinerary and book it through United because UA (like all airlines that are part of an alliance) list partner flights - and it makes total sense to do so. Odds are that no one is going to book a ticket for an itinerary that takes them from Newark to San Jose to Panama to Santiago that takes 20hrs and costs $1000, but... they're already filling the Newark to San Jose flight, and the San Jose to Panama flight, and the Panama to Santiago flights separately - if someone wants to pay a ridiculous amount to book the whole itinerary I'd sure as hell let them do that too!

Re: United fares to the DR

like the guys are saying........it's all carriers with these insane high airfares to like the DR etc.......
June was like $500 and $600 to fly to Santo Domingo or Montego Bay from just Tampa or Orlando FL.......
and I only paid $240 R/T to Montego Bay in Feb of this year from Tampa......
so how can I justify paying $600 to fly to Montego Bay or $500 to Santo Domingo this summer.......it really sucks mon

It's not just POP. Check flights to SDQ and the May/June travel prices are 30% higher than they were in April as well. There will be people on the same flights from DCA/MIA/SDQ on Tuesday who paid $500+. I paid $346. There used to be a formula (3-6 weeks advance) to figuring the price breaks. Now we have to be flexible with our travel dates and check prices every day.

I always flew continental to POP and I did notice when they joined with United that prices went up bigtime.

They've technically been the same airline for over a year, just with separate names - and I got two flights to POP last year for under $350 each. Flight prices are up across the board this year to pretty much everywhere, it's not just United. Try getting a JetBlue flight into POP for under $450, apart from an occasional special/discount fare - they ain't out there.
