The leading annual photography event in the Dominican Republic, PhotoImagen opened yesterday, Tuesday 4 September with a ceremony at the Museum of Modern Art. The MAM is exhibiting the works of Brazilian photographers, an event curated by Diogenes Moura.

25 institutions are presenting 32 photography exhibitions during PhotoImagen 2012. The main exhibits at the mega-event, which is organized by photographer Mayra Johnson, are four large displays at the Museum of Modern Art in Plaza de la Cultura. The exhibits are: "Of the Sons of the Land," a collective exhibition by Brazilian artists curated by Diogenes Moura; Revitalized, with works by Gonzalo Cordero de Ciria, Thomas Pichardo, Elena Wen and Juan Carlos Guzman, curated by Sara Hermann; Works by Quisqueya Henriquez, Manuel Mathiu, Ariadna Canaan, Fued Yamil Koussa, Pancho Rodriguez and Fausto Ortiz, curated by Sara Hermann; "Memento Mori," curated by Carlos Acero with works by photographers from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Israel, Mexico, Paraguay, the United States, Venezuela and host Dominican Republic.

The Museo de las Casas Reales is also taking part in PhotoImagen, and on Thursday, 6 September at 8pm, an exhibit curated by Sara Hermann on the border with Haiti ("At the sides of the limit - DR-Haiti") will open, with photographs by Haitians Tatiana Mora Laiataud, Neviene Smith and Marie Elizabeth Arago with others by Dominicans Carlos Acero, Pedro Farias Nardi, Pancho Rodriguez and Mayra Johnson.

That same day, the Capilla de los Remedios presents a photography exhibit by Colombian Erika Diettes.

On Friday, 7 September, the Centro Cultural de Espana presents "Places where I was loved" by Onofre Bachiller (Spain) and Glitch Progression by Venezuelan Elisa Bergel Melo, curated by artist Quisqueya Henriquez.

Casa de Teatro joins in with "Obstructions" by Dominicans Pepe Coronado, "Cura Animarum" by Marielle Deluna, and "F'e largre'I" by Pedro Farias-Nardi, with the curatorship of Sara Hermann.

Other institutions that will host photography exhibitions include Museo de la Resistencia, Quinta Dominica, Arte Berri, Casa de Italia, Laboratorio Evolutivo, Autozama, Instituto Cultural Dominico-Americano, Museo Bellapart, District & Co., Arawak Art Gallery, Mesa Fine Arts and Galeria Bodden, as reported in Diario Libre.
