Following reports from the United States exposing the presence of arsenic in rice, Minister of Agriculture Luis Ramon Rodriguez has guaranteed that there is no toxicity in the rice sold in the Dominican Republic. He issued a statement saying that Dominican consumers have nothing to fear when consuming the rice on sale in the country, clarifying that the toxic rice had been imported to the United States from India and that the DR does not import rice from India.

Nevertheless, India denied allegations by the European Commission on genetically modified organisms (GMO) contamination in basmati rice exported from India.
