President Danilo Medina has sent a bill to Congress via the Senate, aimed at consolidating the management and operation of food markets in the country under a new body. The new entity will be called Mercados Agropecuarios Dominicanos (Mercadom). It will be a decentralized body attached to the Ministry of Agriculture. The bill also creates the National Food Network (Rena) that will initially be made up of the wholesale market known as Mercado Central de Mayoristas de Santo Domingo (Merca Santo Domingo) and the retail markets of Cristo Rey, Villa Consuelo and Villas Agricolas that have been attached to the City of Santo Domingo government (AND).
