Re: FREE DR GPS Maps for Garmin & Android devices

I can confirm (after having just used them on my Garmin for a few weeks) that not only do these maps work in the DR but they contain a lot of POI's, hotels, bars, restaurants, etc. Every street (even little side streets I drove on in Sosua and Santiago) were mapped and named. The only thing it didn't know was which ones were one way streets (though the Dominicans don't really seem to follow those rules anyway. jajaja).

Pretty damned cool for free, I can't imagine that the GPS maps that people are paying nearly $100 for online work any better.

Which new Garmin model will you recommend for NA and DR?

I don''t know, really. I just got a nuvi 50LM and I like it, but I haven't used any other garmin to compare it to. I loved my Magellan, but it started flaking out on me and needed an upgrade and went with a Garmin because I had the free DR maps available.

I spent $10 extra to get the lifetime maps version, I don't know if it'll actually be worth it for the maps, but if they update the POI's that'd be solid.

So, in essence... I don't know. Find one with specs that do it for you at a price that works. It's a GPS, aren't they all pretty much the same?

BTW, the DR maps couldn't have been easier to install. Just unzipped the archive and it was a straight drag and drop with the gps hooked up to my pc.

As an added bonus, I've converted the points of interest (bars, clubs, casas, cabañas, etc) from the google map of Santiago into an importable form for the Garmin.

just download and install Garmin POI loader:
    http://www.garmin.com/us/maps/poiloader

    download the Santiago POI's here:
    http://www.filedropper.com/santiagodeloscaballeros

then with your garmin attached to your pc via usb cable, run POI loader
"Select where you would like to save your custom POI's" -->choose your Garmin device
    Select your device.
Then choose "Install New custom POI's onto your device"
Select the location of the Santiago POI's file you just downloaded and then hit "next" and you're done.
POI's will be saved into your favorites list.
