Going to Santiago on Jan 25th

Good evening. Yesterday I told my daughter that I would be visiting Santiago for two weeks to attend a conference. LOL She wanted to go with me since we have not spend a lot of time together. I thought about taking her but I do not want her to know that daddy is a horny freak. So this Christmas, I plan on taking her to Seattle to see her cousins. She is excited and daddy is even more excited. LOL Honey, please forgive me. But daddy has been putting up with a lot of your mother's bullshit for many years. LOL I will do my research here and thank you all by preparing a nice trip report.

Re: Going to Santiago on Jan 25th

Jcrew knows santiago very well. I could also help with any questions. But lets start off with this:

    1. Do you know anyone in Santiago?
    2. My impression is that you are traveling solo. Do you have any friends in the DR that could serve as guides while you're in Santiago?
    3. From 1-10, with 10 being native fluency, what is your level of spanish proficiency?

I mentioned this in the other thread, if this is your first mongering trip in the DR and you do not speak at least a 4 or above level of Spanish, I've got a feeling that Santiago will not be as enjoyable as it could be for you. I will again recommend that you go to Sosua, meet a couple of expats or experienced tourists so you can learn how it's done on the ground. Once you have a couple of trips under your belt and your spanish is better then you should go to santiago.

Re: Going to Santiago on Jan 25th

But if you insist on going to Santiago as your first trip, my recommendation would be to hang out at the Gran Almirante casino and talk to other tourists while playing blackjack or poker. Try to find some American wingmen so you're not traveling around by yourself in a city you don't know. Santiago its not a violent city by any stretch, but if the wrong person sees a lost American with no clue of what they're doing, you'll be in trouble.

Re: Going to Santiago on Jan 25th

I have to second Ruckus's post. I went to Santiago for a couple hours and without my friend who spoke Spanish, we would have had a VERY hard time. He speaks great Spanish and he was having trouble there. I would love to do Santiago for a couple days, but until I get more proficient in Spanish...Its just not going to happen. It was a real wakeup call.

Re: Going to Santiago on Jan 25th

I'm planning on hitting up Santiago for a couple days/nights over New Years. My Spanish is not very good, but I have a bunch of things set up with chicas via fb/tagged/badoo so shouldn't have a problem filling my time.

And I suppose there's always the casas (though I'm not real clear on what the pricing or talent level is like at the various spots).

Got a map full of bars, restaurants (and cabanas - thanks Uncle Ruckus!) and gps maps so should be able to find my way around, we'll see how that goes.

If things aren't working out I can always leave and head north.

This is the way it should be done. Deezl already has good experiences on the North Coast. He's been able to connect with some Stgo. chicas online (even though he won't accept my FB friend request so I can steal all his chicas ) and set stuff up before he arrives. Even if the Spanish isn't perfect, he's been around enough to understand what people are saying and communicate what he wants. He's probably going to have a blast.

    Yeah.

    Thanks for that helpful tidbit.

(That was almost worthy of a good old fashioned "Duh!" - maybe even a "Doy!")

This is good advice. I wouldn't put my Spanish skills above a level four and, while I can get by when necessary, it can be difficult. I speak better than I understand. So I can ask for directions but can rarely understand the response.
    Enjoy it while you can.

Me tambien. My listening skills are for crap. Even when it's no rapido.

But, it's so much fun when you can get one on one with them and exchange languages. Many of them want to learn it just as much as we do theirs.

    Tu sabes.

If you have chance, on your second weekend is the beginning of the Carnaval in La Vega, less than half an hour from Santiago. Thousands of ligther skin Dominicanas will be in the streets.
Of course La Vega requires some spanish skills since its not a tourist or a whore village but even if you dont pick up a chica, you will witness one of the most important event in the Dominican Republic.

Who would want to miss the opportunity to get the shit beat out of you with cow bladder balloons filled with rocks?? Other than the violence and crippling, suffocating crowds, it's a blast!

Sorry if I sound bitter, but I still haven't gotten over the fucking diablo cojuelos that beat the shit out of me when I was 14 years old.

Perhaps you were a slow learner as a 14 year old. I went last year and within minutes I understood you needed to be standing somewhere with your back to a wall.

Just remember. If you get to and stay in Santiago, and things aren't working out for you. Don't get down about it and write your vacation and the DR off. Hop on the Metro bus and head to Sosua.

Thank you TNT72. I was thinking of taking the Metro bus (public transportation) and head up north to Sosua first. All of you are kind and cool guys. Drinks are on me if I have the chance to meet any of you.
