Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.- A spate of violent often drug-related crimes has rattled the resort town of Sosua, where some business owners have opted to shut their doors on fears of reprisal.

In the latest incident, a local political leader was shot dead after he denounced a drug-dealer’s business in Puerto Plata, and the victim’s 24-year-old son was seriously hurt in the assault.

Adalberto Pichardo Martinez, 55, a leader of the PRD party and head of Sosua’s Sanitation Dept., died from gunshots sustained Monday night.

Gunmen shot the victim after he denounced the dealer who’s allegedly protected by authorities.
The police arrested Juan Demo Riveras, who according the report, was caught while hiding in a cave next to the shore.

    Fear in Cabarete

Two owners of surfing school at El Encuentro beach in nearby Cabarete were forced to abandon the area after being threatened by drug dealers, and in one case one of the facilities was torched and totally gutted.

One of the business owners, who asked not to reveal their name, said he shuttered his business on fears that the drug dealers would retaliate for denouncing their activity.

Top drug cop vows to nab those behind resort town murder

    from Dominican Today

    José Adalberto Pichardo (Baberto).

Santo Domingo.- National Drugs Control (DNCD) president Rolando Rosado on Tuesday vowed to head the investigation into the murder by alleged drug traffickers of a Sosua City Hall official who denounced a business that sells narcotics.

He said he’ll travel with the DNCD’s Intelligence director to Puerto Plata today, because the authorities won’t tolerate attacks on citizens who denounce drug trafficking.

Alleged drug traffickers gunned down Adalberto Pichardo Martinez Monday night. His 24 year-old son Jose was also seriously injured in the shooting.
Rosado said those responsible for Pichardo’s death will be identified and charged.

you know the problem with drugs is getting worse when they have to get someone outside of the local police force to conduct an investigation of a murder.

Theres a lot more to this story than just someone denouncing a drug dealer. His son was at the center of it all and all he did was try to stop his son from getting killed.

There are a number of higher ups (Colonels +) in the Policia Nacional who are very loyal to the PRD. If this guy really had any pull with the PRD, then the PN is going to be hitting these drug dealers pretty strongly. Unless of course there are even higher-higher ups that have already been bought by this cartel.

I have zero trust in the DNCD. The former DNCD director was arraigned last week in US Federal District Court for being one of the biggest drug traffickers out of the DR.

Ex Dominican antinarcotics official faces 50 years in jail

NEW YORK. - The former operations chief of Dominican Republic’s antinarcotics agency (DNCD) was arraigned in South District Federal Court Monday after being extradited Friday from the Dominican Republic to face charges drug trafficking, conspiracy and of smuggling nearly 1,000 kilos of cocaine into the U.S. from the Caribbean country.

Prosecutors said Francisco Antonio Guerrero Hiraldo and other unnamed accomplices in the 9-page indictment used his privileged position to protect politically connected drug dealers and help them ship drugs to the U.S., and include former Dominican Army Capt. Quirino Paulino, now being held in federal facility in Brooklyn and yet to be sentenced after plea bargaining.

In a statement on Hiraldo’s appearance in federal court, prosecutors said the defendant and others, known and unknown, conspired to ship cocaine and other narcotics to U.S. territory between 2001 and 2005.

Prosecutors said in November 2007 the retired admiral protected a shipment of 600 kilos of cocaine from Colombia to Dominican Republic on boats, adding that if convicted, Hiraldo faces at least 50 years in federal prison.

Vandals torch surfing school at Cabarete beach

    from Dominican Today

Cabarete, Dominican Republic.- On the night of Holy Wednesday (March 27, 2013), the start of the high holiday of Semana Santa, criminal hands robbed and burned down the surf school "House of Waves" at Encuentro Beach, Cabarete. The school was run by Dominican National Jesmarin Puente, originally from Santo Domingo and residing on the North Coast in Cabarete for the previous ten years.

The looting and arson claimed all of the surfing equipment that was stored inside, including 60 surfboards, and the Sosua Fire Department has officially deemed the fire as arson.

An explosion was reported as being heard by neighbors, and flames were witnessed engulfing the Kana and Kaoba wood storage shack at 9pm in the evening. Surrounding Almendra trees were scorched and destroyed, and everything inside the shack was lost including children`s beach toys, lifesaving and rescue equipment, surf competition items and more.

House of Waves is the private business of Mr. Puente, which provides surf lessons, training, and a surf club for local kids. Together with his American girlfriend and their young daughter, the family supported numerous initiatives for the benefit of the community including regular beach cleanups, medical missions by the group Waves of Health, the Dream Project`s youth training program A Ganar, and the Surfrider Foundation’s annual International Surfing day, among others.
