09/2013 - Synopsis & comparison Blackbeards & Field of Dreams

In August I did 2 days at Blackbeards and 2 days at Field of Dreams for the purpose of my personal curiosity and to do a comparison for other mongers who are interested. For those who are not interested in the entire report I have complied the below listed synopsis:

    Locations:

Blackbeard's is in the Costmbar area outside Puerto Plata. It is a laid back gated community with a beach and very comfortable.

Field of Dreams is on Calle Principal across the street from Playa Dorado in between Puerto Plata and Sosua.

    Web Presence:

Blackbeard's has had the same web-site for years the design is quite antiquated but it is easy to navigate and everything is easy to find. All responses to inquiries were responded to in a timely manner.

Field of Dreams has a very modern web site that is very user friendly and informative. The responses were delayed and not timely.

    Room quality:

Blackbeard's basic room was small but quite comfortable. The air conditioning worked well and I had view of the grounds from the balcony. The WI-FI worked intermittently in the room and when it didn't I used the WI-FI outside the room on the balcony. The furniture was decent and my room had a 24 inch flat screen TV but I am not much of a TV person on vacation.

Field of Dreams basic room was a decent size and quite comfortable. The air conditioning worked well and I had a view of the pool from my room. The WI-FI worked intermittently in and outside the room. The furniture was modern and my room had a 24 inch flat screen TV with the porn channel on when I walked in the room...what kind of guy do they think I am?

    Payment:

Blackbeard's basic room was $45.00 per night plus $8.00 tax for a total of $106.00 for 2 nights.

Field of Dreams basic room was $50.00 per night a total of $100.00 for 2 nights.

    Mini Bar fridge:

Blackbeard's - Blackbeard's discourages bringing food and drinks from outside but of course it can be done. The mini-bar had drinks and chips but no candy like last time. I had to suck it up when I got that chocolate craving in the middle of the night. The mini-bar had the basics: chips 60DP, water 40DP, beer 120DP Pepsi &7Up 60DP and rum 375DP. 16%TAX AND 10% service charge.

Field of Dreams had no refrigerator or mini-bar and when I woke up in the middle of the night with the munchies I was hurtin.

    Safes:

Blackbeard's there was a key safe in the wall of the main closet.

Field of Dreams there was a key/combination safe in the wall of the main closet. Management wanted a $50.00 deposit for the key that would be returned upon departure. I passed as I have a combination lock on my luggage.

    Assistance with luggage:

    Blackbeard's total self serve

Field of Dreams total self serve

    Staff service & Housekeeping:

Blackbeard's staff was EXCELLENT for the most part everybody was upbeat with greetings and good customer service.

Field of Dreams staff was good it started off slow in the absence of management but when the managers showed up for the most part everybody was upbeat with greetings and good customer service.

    Bar:

Blackbeard's has 2 bars one downstairs next to the pool and one upstairs where they host events
Field of Dreams has 1 bar which serves as a front desk and center of all the action.

    Grounds:

    Blackbeard's grounds were immaculate.

Field of Dreams grounds were immaculate.

    Restaurants:

Blackbeard's the food is reasonable and everything I ate was tan sabroso

    • Desayuno - Most of the breakfast items are a la cart. Eggs, bacon, toast and home-fries with a drink will cost approximately 250DP
    • Almuerzo - Chef salad - 195DP
    • Cena - Sanchocho con arroz y pan -300DP

Field of Dreams the menu was less extensive than Blackbeards and did not include comida tipico. In addition there were 1000DP items such as 10oz sirloin steak. In general everything was more expensive than Blackbeards. Everything I had was good.

    • Desayuno - Most of the breakfast items are a la cart. Eggs, bacon, I had pancakes and fruit. The pancakes were good with a orange flavor to them. 210DP
    • Almuerzo - Caesar Salad with chicken 318DP. It came with cheese, I made it clear I didn't want cheese and they rectified it and brought me another salad.
    • Cena - Pechuga de Pollo en Miel -409DP. The chicken breast was juicy and I could taste a hint of honey and butter.

    Noise:

Blackbeards during the day there was some repairing going on so I heard some hammering. At night if there is an event going on in the second bar upstairs you will be able to hear the music and noise associated with the crowd. After midnight everything shut down and it was tan tranquilo.

Field of Dreams At night if there is an event going on you will be able to hear the music and noise associated with the crowd. After midnight everything shut down and it was tan tranquilo. I woke up one morning to the sounds of a man having what sounded like a heart attack, I cannot imagine what he was doing...

    Transportation:

Blackbeards staff can call a moto or taxi per your request.

Field of Dreams staff can call a taxi per your request. (no motos because of the location)

    Safety:

Blackbeards has overnight security and the gate is locked after midnight when the chicas leave. At no time during my stay did I feel unsafe.

Field of Dreams has overnight security and the gate is locked after midnight when the chicas leave. At no time during my stay did I feel unsafe.

    Excursions:

The below list of excursions is not exhaustive but just a sample of things to do:

    Amber Museum - Puerto Plata

    Brugal Rum Tour- Puerto Plata

    Ocean World- Puerto Plata

Damajagua Cascades (I guess it's like Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica)

Mount Isabel de Torres - the park and the Teleferico - Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata town - El Centro (for shopping and souvenirs)

    Golf in Playa Dorada

    Horseback & ATVing

Playa Dorada AI day pass for the beach

    Chicas:

    Blackbeard's Chicas:
The chicas are directly accountable to 1 of 2 Mamasans who have the authority to hire and fire them. All complaints and issues with the chicas are to be resolved through the Mamasan because the chicas are independent contractors that do not work for the hotel. There are 2 groups of chicas. the afternoon shift 11am- 6pm approximately a dozen and the evening shift approximately 2 dozen from 5pm - midnight. 1600DP for ST and 3000DP for TLN. The majority of the chicas work 6 days a week with 1 day off however some have other arrangements with the Mamasan. When they arrive at work they sign in and are required to turn their cell phones in. (EXCELLENT idea) They will often start their shift in heels and end in flats and of course I can't blame them.
The chicas are very friendly with one another and will often approach you in pairs in order to encourage "Happy Hour." Some will approach and give their saludos and others will just sit back tranquilla. Some really know how to work the room and others just look. I sensed no jealousy or competition it is as if they are a family, they share drinks and food together.
The chicas ranged from 6-8 with some stars (close to 9)that could pass for models, but I would say the average would be rated a 7.
    GFE & PSE
All of the chicas I dealt with were pleasant some were more friendly than others. The sessions were professional but not mechanical. I could best describe them as somewhere between GFE and PSE, I found I either enjoyed the BBBJ or the sex more as can be expected each girl had her strengths and weaknesses.

    Field of Dreams Chicas
The chicas are directly accountable to a Mamasans or the manager on duty. All the chicas are independent contractors that do not work for the hotel. Some of the chicas live on the property. One of the chicas told me she lives in one large room with no TV that has 6 beds and sometimes sleeps 10 chicas. There are 2 groups of chicas the ones who live on sight and the ones who live off sight which stragle in during different parts of the day. The tarifa is 1600DP for ST and 3000DP for TLN. The majority of the chcas work 6 days a week with 1 day off however some have other arrangements with the management. The chicas are not required to sign in or turn their cell phones in. There would be a dozen chicas on property at any time in comparison to twice as many at Blackbeards.
The chicas are very friendly with one another and they were a more lively group than the Blackbeards chicas. They do not work in pairs like the Blackbeards chicas. Some will approach and give their saludos and others will just sit back tranquilla. Some really know how to work the room and others just look. I sensed no jealousy or competition it is as if they are a family, they share drinks and food together. The chicas ranged from 5-7 with 1 or 2 close to 8. The chicas spent their time playing pool, in the pool or playing cards.
    GFE & PSE
All of the chicas I dealt with were pleasant some were more friendly than others. The sessions were not professional like Blackbeards I had my first PSE and GFE of the trip here. The chicas in general could not touch the Blackbeards chicas but they made up for it in attitude and fun.

    Check in & Check out

Blackbeard's has a check in desk, everything went smooth details are reviewed from their handbook and you are given your keys.

Field of Dreams has no check in desk and the office was closed upon my arrival. There is no handbook or orientation on how things work you are simply given your keys and fend for yourself.

    Cambio:

    • Wells Fargo Bank US: 37-1
    • Exchange POP airport: 36-1
    • Western Union (La Sirena Puerto Plata): 42.6-1
    • Jenny's Market Costambar: 42-1
    • Balckbeard's: 40-1
    • Field of Dreams: 42-1

    Jacuzzi Option:

Blackbeards has a Jacuzzi Option, you can take a girl into the Jacuzzi where both of you can get naked for about 30 minutes for 500DP. If you decide to session with her the 500DP is rolled into the regular tarifa 1600DP for ST and 3000DP for TLN. I did not try this option so I cannot make any personal observations.
I saw a Jacuzzi at Field of Dreams however it had no water in it and I am unaware if they offer a similar option.

    Conclusion:

Both Blackbeards and Field of Dreams are inexpensive hotel options where mongers can practice this thing of ours in relative safety. They are excellent places for the novice monger or the veteran monger who does not want to hunt and desires everything at his fingertips. Since they both are controlled environments issues such as negotiation of tarifas, thefts and scams are rarely if ever an issue. The difference between the two options is Blackbeards is far more organized and efficient than Field of Dreams; in addition not only does Blackbeards have twice as many chicas on site than Field of Dreams the chicas of Blackbeards in general are far more attractive. I experienced 4 Blackbeards chicas and 2 Field of Dreams chicas and although I enjoyed them all I enjoyed my experience with the Field of Dreams chicas the most.

The primary advantage of Field of Dreams in my opinion is its location which is close to both the airport and Sosua. If a monger has a transportation he can more readily use Field of Dreams as a base of operations since Blackbeards is much further away from Sosua.

Finally if I was seeking a simple inexpensive sex vacation with the minimum of hassles I would choose Blackbeards over Field of Dreams as in all things YMMV.

Camaro, if out of 6 total sessions, your 2 best were at FOD yet you'd still stay at BB's next time, I can only imagine how lacking the selection must have been at FOD while you were there.

I know my logic is DISCOMBOBULATED...is that a word?...let me explain there were some women at Blackbeards that were 8 model quality I mean tan hermosa but they were less GFE than the Field of Dreams chicas. In addition the Field of Dreams chicas were a more fun and lively group. The reason I would choose Blackbeards over Field of Dreams is that there were more women they were more attractive and I sensed from all of the chicas I was with I could get GFE if I spent more quality time with them I just didn't have enough time to make that type of connection.

I have been to FOD probably 10 times. It was always a day trip from Sosua. The one thing that makes it worth the drive is the quality of the session. I have never had a bad session from FOD. GFE every time.

My last time there, I felt the quality of girls had slipped. I did not see one cute spinner. I only saw a bunch of 6s hanging around. This was a Tuesday, so I ended up leaving after one drink. I hit the stores in Puerto Plata instead.

I do plan to go back again. Costumbar is far for a quick day trip and I am not spending the night at Blackbeards.

This is a great comparison. I stayed at Blackbeard's for a few nights during my trip to DR last year. If I went to DR again, I was planning on doing a short stay at FOD but from photos I've seen as well as this review, I too would opt to skip it in favour of Blackbeard's too. More selection and this is important for me since I found that I'm only attracted to a certain % of the DR women there. So if I catch FOD on a bad time, it could be slim pickings for me no matter what the GFE would be.

Re: Synopsis & comparison Blackbeards & Field of Dreams

Add my vote to the "Thank You Very Much" column for the detail comparison report. I have stayed numerous times at Blackbeards, usually for a week or so. I know most report they get bored and need to move on to Sosua after a few days. As for me, I enjoy reading, relaxing at the pool or nearby tranquil beach and taking a few side trips (I rent a car) to Puerto Plata, Sosua, Santiago and a few other places. So boredom was never a problem. In fact, I would have no problem staying another eight days, the length of my normal trips.

I have also visited Field of Dreams numerous times, but not overnight.

However, most of my trips are in Sosua where I stay at The Palms.

I agree with the comparisons made between Blackbeards and FoD.

While I like the fact that FoD continues to make improvements and seeks to listen to its customers, I still choose Blackbeards. Probably the biggest reasons are consistency, quality and value. Blackbeards is well-managed. The quality of food, rooms and facilities are excellent. The pricing for food, rooms and drinks are competitive and I never feel gouged there. I like the location. The quality of the chicas has always been very good when I've been there and are always friendly without being pushy. While they have some great activities and parties, the atmosphere also allows for both times of entertainment and relaxation. Plus, I always enjoy reading their newsletter . . . and seeing the photos. I sense that the management of Blackbeards is always concerned and, therefore, addresses the overall experience of its guests from food to rooms to atmosphere to grounds to entertainment to value. I've seen way too many businesses and business owners allow success to go to their heads and end up killing to goose that laid the golden egg. The ownership and management of Blackbeards appears to be sensitive to that danger by remaining ever sensitive to its customers.

I sense that FoD is trying to do some of the same and I wish them success. I think there is plenty of room for two such places, especially if the leadership of Sosua and beyond continue to try and kill their goose.

I've never been to FOD.- But I would add Blackbeards has access to a beach - and they have a pretty awesome Massage and Manicure service on site by a cute little Chica - Maide.

Prettty sure no beach near FOD - not sure about other value added services offered....

Discombulated - just starting to be widely used in the uk over the last 6 months or so - so I guess it's a word - not sure what the rest of the world make of the word.

From the American Heritage Dictionary, 1975:

Discombobulate, tr. v. -lated, lating, lates. Slang. To throw into a state of confusion; disconcert; upset. [Mock-Latin formation.]

    Just so's you know.

Thanks for the report - I'm headed to BB for 2 nights then Sosua in Oct.

Tipping, which is not just a city in china, is something I'm used to doing at home by habit and by virtue of working as a bartender.

Is tipping part of standard practice at BB or FOD? Do the chicas ask/beg for propina after the sessions?

If so - what would be an appropriate amount?

I'm likely at least to round-up to 2000 pesos or more for PSE/fotos/2-leche.

Does a tip make me a gentleman or sucker?

Does witholding make me a cheapskate the finer chicas will ignore?

Is tipping part of standard practice at BB or FOD? Do the chicas ask/beg for propina after the sessions?

If so - what would be an appropriate amount?

I'm likely at least to round-up to 2000 pesos or more for PSE/fotos/2-leche.

Does a tip make me a gentleman or sucker?

Does witholding make me a cheapskate the finer chicas will ignore?
...tipping is neither required or expected either at Blackbeards or Field of Dreams. If it were me I would use that tip money to have breakfast, lunch or dinner with one or more of the girls for the purpose of building rapport. Both groups of women would appreciate the gesture and the investment would likely pay dividends in GFE going forward...

When are you going to Blackbeards in Oct? I've been there many times and am pretty familiar with the experience. Ken

I'm arriving at BB wed 10/9 and checking out Fri 10/11 to head to Sosua for 2 nights.

Are you going to be there any of those days?

Interested in splitting rides b/w POP / BB / Sosua? I already reserved the BB driver for POP airport pickup at 2:00 on 10/9.
