The passport card is only valid for land border crossings, and sea ports. However it works just fine as ID.

As to whether you should carry or copy or not.?

You should always have some form of ID on your person when in the streets anywhere in the world.
Anything could happen, and a copy is better than nothing at all.

Your fears of identity theft, and using that as a reason to not carry ID are kinda tin foil hat nutty actually..(do you have the same fears in the US)?

My travel wallet includes color laminated copies of my Drivers License, my passport (reduced), and my passport card.
I am always asked to present ID when stopped in the DR, and I have never had an issue using these copies.

You can get these copies made at the copy shop behind Baileys for ~300 pesos.

So,you are always asked to present ID when stopped in the DR ? I've been going to DR since 1995 and have never been stopped or asked for ID with the exception of presenting my passport at the airport. Under what circumstances have you been stopped in DR? Do you rent a car & travel between towns? I've heard about check points.

As far as do I have the same fears in the US, no I do not because most streets in the US are not like Pedro Clisante where you have to worry about every other broad trying to pick pocket you.

I was aware of this. I bought the card in addition to the passport.

I have been rethinking the paper copy and last trip carried my passport card instead. Kept passport in safe.
What I was thinking as well when I decided to get the card.

In Sosua, at times I went all the way down to the end of the beach. I was scared.

Believe it or not, some people go more than five minutes beneath Sosua Bay. Scary, eh?

I had a negative experience with the same guy across the street from Rumba. I caught it that he was trying to rip me off. He had a bogus rate on his paper. I got pissed. I pulled out my phone and quoted the daily exchange rate and showed him. He said no problem and gave me the correct rate. If he thinks you do not know anything he will rip you off.

Re: 12/2013 - New Cambio Scam

He is Ruthless.. I have watched him give several people including a young couple like 2 full pesos BELOW the going rate, not fractions 2 full pesos, per dollar
.. and this one stupid bitch even says to her husband " hey honey, thats much better than what we got at the Airport, right "..
Face Palm... so with SUCKERS like that flying in daily, and as SOSUA becomes Mayor Iliana Neumann's UTOPIA Beach Destination of the North Coaast >>>> EXPECT HIS BUSINESS TO get even BIGGER AND BIGGER<< .. NOT smaller.. He is not going anywhere, and is just PROOF of the bullshit & Hypocricy of how they are "protecting" tourists.

The safest and most reliable place to change your money is at Western Union. The rate is correct and no chance of getting fake bills. If you're in a bind and need quick money, use an ATM. I only use Banco Popular.

Any other place you there is a possibility to get taken.

Re: 12/2013 - New Cambio Scam

I actually use Playero most of the time now. The rate is just below western union by 5 pesos on a hundred dollars, and I never have an issue and don't need to lug around my pasport. Sometimes the small one by the beach doesn't have change earlier in the day, but the big one on the main road always does. I will use a guy in the street before I will use the cambio across from Rhumba, they always gave hundred pesos less at night but this new scam is much worse.

I hope you meant 0.5 pesos (half a peso).

thats exactly what he meant,.. it has NEVER EVER been more than half a peso difference,, normally like a quarter of a peso
like lets say 42.15 pesos at Playero, vs like 42.35 at western union . so NO way its worth standing in line at Western union, when you can be out of Playero in under 5 mins

There is a little bank near the silversmith near Mora Mai that has a higher rate than Vimenca.
They may ask for a copy of your passport, not always.

Sorry I fixed it..... it's more like this, but usually 42.60 at WU versus 42.55 at Playero, the difference is almost nothing. I was talking about 5 pesos on a hundred dollars.
