11/2014 - New police force on North Coast

Started today, new police service MOPC covering the main road, Route 5, from Puerto Plata to Las Terrenas.

    http://www.dominicantoday.com/dr/tou...-safety-patrol

have been seen from Cabarete to Sabaneta, one is stationed by Pappatera in Sosua (see pic below) and one is stationed by the entrance to La Cienaga in Cabarete.

Apparently the idea is to have a roving and mobile force for assistance of any kind, under separate command from the ladrons in Policia Nacional, Cestur or AMET.

    Call them on 829 688 1000.

These guys have been on all the new autopistas, like Nagua - Santo Domingo, since inception and I hear nothing bad about them.

Give them time. When I first came to the DR nine years ago, everyone told me that AMET were honest, unlike the PN.

AMET in Santo Domingo still seem to be pretty much on the level.

I had one stop a friend of mine not too long ago for a burned out headlight. He was following me and I saw his light go out. Not 15 seconds later the AMET guy stopped him.

The AMET guy was being kind of a jerk, so I asked him if was because he was just looking for money (we were in a hurry) and the guy got REALLY pissed at me.

I ended up apologizing for it, and he let us go.

I sometimes think the North coast is "AMET Hell" for them.

IMO with the exception of a small minority of the Sosua based AMET the ones we have on the North coast are honest, try bribing one of them and see where that gets you.

In my experience MOPC are similar to SD AMET.

One time I had just entered the SD - Nagua highway when I got a blowout just before the 1st toll booth. The toll operator called MOPC. A MOPC unit came within 5 minutes. Marshalled me to a safer area, took my blown tire off for repair, took the spare for more air just in case, repaired it, brought it back and installed it. Then followed me for 5 miles or so to ensure I was OK. Wouldn't take even a single peso for the repair or even let me buy them a cold drink on a very hot day. Hopefully the new guys on Route 5 are cut from a similar cloth.

Do you think they are there in response to some of the recent reports of people being robbed in guaguas?
    Enjoy it while you can.

No absolutely not. I understand from those that know way more than I do this has been in the pipeline for some time and apparently is part of Danilo's master plan to make the country more secure.

In eleven years, I've never been harassed by customs/immigration officers at the airport where it resulted in money leaving my pocket. And they get paid shit also!!!

I was and pointed to that sign that says report corruption.

Those guys can't really run and hide where cops in cars, can.
