11/2014 - New overstay exit fees

As predicted some time ago the DR govt just introduced on November 1st new fees for all immigration services.

Significant increases across the board for all services but of particular relevance to most here are the overstay fees.

Deported and will likely never get back in.

With all the new immigration regulations coming into effect in the next 12 months or so it is clear the DR govt. don't want broke ass scumbags no more.

that's still not bad compared to what they do in some other countries.......
on the J island if you want to extend your stay over 3 months to like 4, 5 or 6 months......
(forget about staying over 6 months if you don't have the paperwork done ahead of time......mi hear they come looking for you there)
it's $100US to stay over 3 months up to 6 months time......plus going to Immigrations and doing paperwork.......or go thru a travel agent and pay them......
guess I should look into what happens on the J island if you don't do the paperwork to extend your stay.........lol
or try to leave the country after your stamp has expired.......lol.....mi bet it could get expensive.......and cause problems when you return

Still way cheaper than Thailand. Last year I had to make a special trip to the Consulate in Edmonton (two hours away) to pay $ 80 for a double entry visa, plus another $ 60 for a 30 day extension in Pattaya, for a total of $ 140 for a three month stay. Compare this to the DR. $ 10 tourist visa on arrival plus $ 60 for the over stay fine, total $ $ 70.

WW, did the $ 10 tourist card go up too?

I haven't seen anything about that so no idea but I don't think the tourist card falls under the jurisdiction and fee structures of Migracion, possibly Turismo control that.

You are probably right. I am sure if it had changed there would be a bunch of whining going on over at DR 1 by now!!!

So according to the new chart, an overstay of even one day, you pay a penalty of 2500 pesos. But....overstay another 364 days, and you only pay twice as much? Doesn't seem like such a hardship to me. Pay roughly $120 fine as you head for the departure gate after a year in the DR. Not a bad deal!

It's not until you get to the 3-4 year mark where you get into some serious coin.

The riff raff will still be around.

I'm sure Seville and others will get around to regularizing their respective immigration status sooner or later.

Re: 11/2014 - New overstay exit fees

looked into this on the J island........and if you overstay......especially over 6 months....
you have to go to court and pay a fine (it's within most peoples means) and leave the country.......
if you don't pay the fine they stick you in jail......ugh.......certainly not a place you want to be
but the kicker is they will not let you back into the country for a year or two or more.....depending on the circumstances
personally know of 2 people that overstayed by years.......one had to wait like 2 or 3 years to return to Jamaica
the other was a hot 35 yr old USA Prosts turned drug user like a lot there...."Blondie" was her name...
and she hasn't made it back to Jamaica..probably homeless in the USA.....sad story
Blondie was actually a really good looking blonde the first year or two she was there...almost picked her up at Alfreds back in the mid 90's
she had a ton of guy friends...but she never hung with any Jamaican gurls...a lot of Jamaican gurls won't hang with other Jamaican gurls too
but after 5 years you didn't even recognized her.....after like 8 or 10 years she was a skeleton and was really scary looking......
amazing what can happen in that lifestyle in a short time....they picked her up twice before she was finally gone......
the Jamaican government probably finally had to pay her ticket out....

4 years comes out to just over 400 pesos per month. No offense, but if that's going to break the bank..........(fill in the blank)...........

I agree with WW though. If you plan on being there awhile, other options are more feasible.

I have no doubt that these increases will not be the last.

It has been fully documented that DR immigration, due to outside pressures as much as any internal desire, is going to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century and be forced to comply with immigration policies as practiced by other nations.

In due course I fully expect these overstay fees to reach possibly punitive levels so that the other options are at least equally attractive.

My first suggestion would be to educate the poor. And they are trying to increase the number of hours in the classroom which is a start.

But I wasn't referring to the poor. I was referring to the SCUMBAGS as WW mentioned.

I met a couple of guys that suggested me getting a Cedula if I plan on living in DR. I thought everyone was just moving there and not doing any official paperwork.
