05/2016 - General election alcohol ban

No sales of alcohol in public places for 24 hours prior to voting and for 3 hours after polling closes.

So from 6am Saturday morning May 14 until 9pm Sunday night May 15.

I assume hotels and casinos will be exempt as they usually are.

    should be a fun weekend

    Agreed.

And locally all the smart money is on Illiana to retain office.

I had a beer with 'one of the powers behind the throne' a couple of weeks ago. He told me that Willie hasn't got a hope in hell.

But stranger things have happened so we shall see.

Last election, I was in Santo Domingo in the Colonial zone. No problem getting beer to go from any number of bars.... we just had to say 'turista' and a bagged bottle was passed over, as long as we left the premises to drink it.

Most local polls have Iliana having a better than 2-1 advantage over Willy. Lots of folks think electing Willy would mean a return to "Sin City" status for Sosua, and lots of Sosua folks don't want that.

It should come as no great surprise that what is preached and enforced in all legalities and aspects of Dominican life is a far different reality to what is practiced and ignored by probably the vast majority.

I've heard the same on the streets from locals the last few weeks. My response to them has been: when did Sosua stop being the Sin City you all don't want? Today was a good day for Willy's supporters, free tank full of gas at Next ( old Coastel) if you car has a white W on it..

I agree whole heartedly, best that they have had in my time, but I have only been here 9 years, so it's him and his predecessor, who was extremely corrupt. I look at what he has done with the infrastructure, which directly effects me, but he has done many other things, that go unnoticed. As he Wayland said you are fighting uphill when you inherit such a corrupt system, that has been in place for ever, many don't realize how difficult that is, plus how dangerous for the one that tries to clean it up too fast.

I have a lot of respect for the man, and what he has done, thus far, and what he has tried to do, it is a hard fight.

Every bar on Pedro Clisante has been closed all day with the exception of Montreal which is open as of 6.30pm and earlier Bourbon St Grill was open.

There aren't even the Sosua pissheads sitting outside Zoilo's

I am told that most of them have no plans to open tomorrow at all either.

They've just made their rounds to the restaurants as well with orders to close. Everyone's hanging at the corner of PC and Dr Rosen wondering what to do or where to go next.

These are the times when you go to your phone book and hope that you've kept it current.

My guess is there's more than a few WWs that are in complete shock. Last presidential election hoseman and I spent Election Day with the favoritas. We had a large bottle of Absolute, quart size thermos, and red bull. We filled the thermos and walked the streets of Sosua with our styrofoam cups. We had a blast. The election is definitely an event you need to plan ahead for.

So, as WW mentioned, if the rules are relaxed for the hotels, then I assume that the bars in the New Garden, El Rancho, Casa Cayena, Coco, Voramar etc, would be the spots to hit up this weekend?

I'm surprised they let the restaurants stay open that late.

There were a select few that were open today that aren't attached to a hotel of sorts. They were packed of course considering the limited options.
