The not being on time part is very much part of the latin culture where "later" can mean in 2 hours, 2 days or 2 weeks.

The part about not living up to financial obligations, I have seen that a lot in countries where they are so poor that it creates a culture of everyone out for themselves, and get away with what you can because next time its you who is being screwed.

Most of these countries, I find the other correlation is the lack of education. Interestingly enough, I find this less of a problem in Cuba where education is more prominent. Now people are very laid back, and will try to get whatever money out of the "gringos" they can, but between themselves seem to have a lot more integrity.

Not sure where in PP you are living these days, but I am heading for my first trip to Sosua Feb 11th for a few days and would love to buy you a drink and have a deeper convo if your interested.
    I will PM you ...thanks.

Another observation is that they live in the moment, so the past doesn't matter and the future isn't here yet.

So you can imagine how this way of living/thinking affects Loans, past favors, future plans, etc. They can only focus on the here and now.

    Re: 01/2017 - Camaro in 2017

    Sosua sights October 10th.

I have noticed a few chics have cars now. I heard they have rental arrangements that make the cars affordable for some of the high end chics.

The black SUV looked like a rental and was driven by the chic in the black and white dress.

The black and white dress had the type of body that some men prefer so I can see how she was in a position to maintain a vehicle.

    Re: 01/2017 - Camaro in 2017

    Tenga cuidado con los taxistas

I absolutely love the freedom that driving in the Dominican Republic provides, but the flip side is that driving here can be a scary proposition especially since it seems as if regardless as to who's fault it is in an accident the gringo is always wrong. I have had a few accidents so I am being more strategic as to when and where I drive.

I returned to using Carribe Tours to Santiago and Santo Domingo on most of my excursions because it is cheaper than driving and less risky. With the use of public transportation comes the use of taxis. Recently I had an Santo Domingo excursion where I arrived at the terminal and was flagged down by a taxista.

Normally you wait out front and take the next taxi in que from uniformed taxistas who generally drive white taxis. This particular taxista was not wearing a uniform and had me cross the street to a parking lot and his vehicle was a black SUV but before I got in I asked "cuantos a Agora Mall?" He says "250 pesos" and I said "pero la ultima vez page 200 pesos" He says "nooooooooooooooo es 250 pesos!" Ok, ok I am not going to argue with you over 50 pesos so I get in and we head out.

Now he says while driving "hay mucho traffic dame 300 pesos" ...WTF? You wait till I get in the vehicle and change the price? So I say "tenemos un acuerdo por 250 pesos no?" Then he goes on and on about how heavy the traffic is and frankly IDGAF about the traffic you said 250 pesos and I am going to pay what we agreed. So I pull out 250 pesos and said "mira voy a pagarte 250 pesos que es nuestra acuerdo!" He starts rambling and agrees.

So we get close to Agora Mall and you know what this fool does. He starts calling me "my frenn...my frenn" this fool wants me to get out and walk across the street because traffic is too heavy in front of the mall. So now I am STEEEEEEEEEEEEAMING! You change the price on me and now you want me to walk across the street when all you have to do is make a left turn and drop me off in front of the mall ...REALLY?

He is rambling about traffic bla bla BLAH and I yelled at him "mira este es tu trabajo!" Since when do I have to make things convenient for him? I am paying for a service he should be making things convenient for me...besides every other taxi always drops me off in front of the mall. He keeps on in rapid fire Spanish complaining but drops me off in front of the mall I gave him the money and left.

I hindsight I should have stuck with the regular taxis that work in front of Carribe Tours. On the way back to Puerto Plata I had another excursion in Santiago. On Carribe Tours traffic was horrible leaving Santo Domingo I shit you not it literally took an hour just to get from the terminal to the edge of the city traffic was so bad. I was so glad I was not driving!

When I arrived in Santiago at night I caught a cab from the Santiago Carribe Tours terminal to Hotel Platino for 150 pesos. The following morning I returned to the Carribe Tours terminal from Hotel Platino and this taxista wanted 180 pesos. I actually don't have a problem with fluctuating taxi fares at different times of the day but I absolutely HATE when they try to take advantage of me.

    Bienvienidos a La Republica Dominicana!

    Re: 01/2017 - Camaro in 2017

    A time of reflection

Hanzo and I talked off line which caused me to reflect on what I am about to share. I remember reading many of his comments about the Dominican Republic and Dominican people and thinking he was being very harsh. During that time I had travelled extensively throughout Latin America but I had not lived outside the United States.

Since living here I have seen the beautiful mountains of Jarabacoa & Constanza and the simple pristine beaches of Monti Cristi. I travelled by gua gua initially and more recently in my truck to many different parts of the Island and I have had many experiences that I will not soon forget. I remember being in the campo and my host offered me their last bit of rice and chicken. I currently have 2 neighbors that time and time again have gone out of their way to help me without the request of 1 peso.

I have had numerous experiences that endear me to the Dominican people but with that said I must say EVERYTHING that Hanzo said about Dominican people and the Dominican Republic is TRUE! I know now not because he said it or because I have vacationed here but because I have lived it and seen it for myself. Recently I heard someone say that all Dominican people were savages. In my experience many can be perceived that way, however I believe part of the problem is the company we keep and the circles we travel in. If you only deal with hoes you will get monger experiences, therefore the reality is the problem is really in the mirror.

I believe life is a journey with an ultimate destination but before you arrive at that destination there are many rights of passage you have to go through along your journey. In my case Dominican Republic is a stop on my journey. Despite the storms I have faced since living here "me siento como un arbol de platino"..."I feel like a plantain tree" in other words I feel as if I am planted here and because I am planted here I have grown as a person and in knowledge of myself and life itself and I am grateful for the opportunity.

One of the most important assets I have living here is the ability to talk to other ex-pats and even communicating with others in the different groups I am in. I have tried to immerse myself in Dominican culture but I can only absorb so much before I reject it all. Sharing with other Americans ads sanity to what otherwise would be an insane situation.

The majority of my chronology has detailed my mongering exploits, however this experience for me is far deeper than mongering. I have seen my strengths and weaknesses as well learned a lot about human nature. Some lessons in life you know but sometimes you need to be reminded so you can know them again.

After my passport expired I was stuck here for about 2 months but now that issue has been resolved it's time to take a vacation from retirement and return to the real world of my family and friends. I think I am going to do a few weeks and re-calibrate.

I will update this thread until I leave.

    Halloween Weekend Sosua

I did not go to Sosua Thursday - Saturday Halloween but it was reported to be off the chain with chicas and mongers. I did go Sunday and apparently things died down...in fact they were DEAD!
