if you are serious about visiting the DR, subscribe to Trip Reports at least until June (and for a month after, to give yourself time to report back to us). You will more than recoup your outlay in money-saving info, plus you will get a lot of entertainment. It will also help you to link up with other members when you are here.
Unless you are coming with a group or speak some Spanish, I would recommend that you stay in a hotel rather than villa on your first visit.
