    04/2017 - New guy

New guy here introducing myself and looking to learn all I can from the vets on this board. I stumbled across this board while surfing for info on the D.R., and it appears that this site contains a wealth of information. I have sent my request to access the various trip reports and other resources, and I look forward to getting some helpful advice from you guys. A little info about my upcoming trip. I will be flying into Santo Domingo (Couldn't be helped it is a free flight), and taking a bus (I assume) into Sosua. If anybody has done this personally or can point me to the appropriate thread I would greatly appreciate it.

Many have done it, but why not try Boca Chica?

No real reason to take that 5 hour bus ride.

I only chose Sosua off of the recommendation of an older dude that I met. I have not made any hotel reservations or anything like that so I have some freedom to move about, and my Spanish is pretty decent so I should be able to communicate ok. Are any of the above-mentioned places as fun/easy as Sosua? Also, I will be traveling with two other people, although I do not think that will affect anything. They cannot speak Spanish.

Take that bus, just get a taxi to take you from the airport to Caribe tours, they'll have a bus leaving hourly. You can always do Boca chica on the way back if you decide to, assuming you're leaving from SDQ as well.

Is Boca Chica welcoming for a 1st timer? I get the feeling that Sosua is mongering on easy mode. I could be mistaken though.

Better to just read reports on both and decide for yourself, different opinions on both places may only confuse you.

You are 31 years old which is exactly half my age. You speak decent Spanish which is a huuuge plus. The Capital is home to 1/3 of the population of the entire country. It's the size of Philadelphia and young Women flock there from every reach in search of finding their pot o' gold every day. The night clubs of Avenida Venezuela were built for guys like you. Dominicans party like it's 1999 every night of every week and the Capital is a young Man's paradise. Forget those beach Ho towns with their scammers and their hardened pro's and explore the best that the D.R. has to offer.

I took my Son to Santo Domingo when he was 28 and he was tossing Ho's like a juggler, getting laid 3-4 times a day and doing 3-somes like it was something he just invented. It's a young Man's town, don't listen to the rest of these old dirty bastards. Hang out at the malls and pick bed mates up for free. Just a little game goes a long way there and the allure of a young Gringo is the Gringo Lotto. You will find many fine, young Women willing to give it up just for a little amorous attention in hopes of whipping you into submission with their feminine wiles. Let them try. Grumpy old Men don't even remember being in your current position.

I live in Boca Chica and have for about the last 5 years, I always recommend to newbies to go to Sosua, you will enjoy yourself more in my opinion. More to do, more like minded people there, Boca Chica is better for a seasoned veteran that has been around the block a few times, and then wants to try something different. Same for Santo Domingo lived there four years before moving to Boca. My first year in the country I lived in Sosua as well, so I have lived in all three places that has been mentioned, and trust me, Sosua will be better for what you are looking for as a first timer.

When I was just a visitor before retiring and moving down, always enjoyed Sosua, did that for at least 4 years before retiring and moving to the DR. Trust your friend's recommendation and do Sosua! After a few years visiting then try the capital and eventually Boca Chica. I am in my 10th year living in country and this is the same advice, I would give any newbie or relative newbie.

    Re: 04/2017 - New guy

Speaking of speaking spanish, when I lived in the capital a guy from this site reached out to me, he was Puerto Rican from Puerto Rico so obviously no problems with spanish he was about 35 as I recall. We hung in the capital on a few of his visits, always had a good time but even with his spanish level and relatively young age, he depended on me to figure out what to do. So one day I told him to try Sosua, he resisted saying it was hard to get to Sosua from Puerto Rico and it was much more expensive. Told him continue to fly into Santo Domingo and take the bus up north. Finally one day he took my advice, he has never hung in the capital again, he absolutely loves Sosua and he takes 2 or 3 trips a year. Whenever we make contact he thanks me profusely, he is one of many.
