07/2018 - Playa Encuentro Surf Shacks Gone!

Bad news for all of the surfers! All of the surf schools and shacks on Playa Encuentro were knocked down and removed yesterday. Police were present to allow it to happen. Word is that the minister of tourism ordered this. Sad day for Sosua and Cabarete.......what's next? Bulldoze the shacks on Sosua beach??

They were illegally squatting on the land. They were warned in 2016 to get the hell out and they ignored the warning.

Can't say for sure what was really going on. All of the surf schools were paying rent to ayuntamento. Same as the beach bars and restaurants on Sosua beach. The surf schools were all on public land, within the 60 meter setback. Many of the Sosua beach businesses are squatting on private land, others are within the 60 meter setback. Meanwhile Playa Encuentro is open. The surf schools are operating out of pickup trucks and life continues in the sunny DR.

The surf shacks were paying rent to a known north coast mobster who did not nor does not own the land.
