A post in the North Coast/Sosua/Hotels/Europa section got off topic (what a surprise!) - and the subject of traveling with a laptop/notebook computer came up.
I'm leaving for my 7th DR trip in a day or two and ALWAYS travel with my PowerBook. My observations...
- First, I've YET to see a hotel safe that'll handle an average-sized notebook. I don't even bother asking anymore.
- Second, I HIGHLY recommend getting a special lock/cable device that locks into that little 1/4" by 1/16" slot on most notebooks (the one that most notebook owners never even notice). The best are made by Kensington.

The cable on these things is usually around 6' long, and they're light enough to pack. I usually use the gadget to attach my notebook to a bed frame, closet rod, plumbing pipe or something else pretty much immovable by your average chica.
They run around $35 US. Are they for sure-fire theft prevention? No - but I feel better knowing that I've taken sufficient precaution to keep honest people honest. Hope this helps a fellow monger or two.
