    Carnaval in the Dominican Republic

If you are in the DR during february ya gotta check out Carnaval. la Vega has the most famous, but most towns have some sort of celebration. It is not as crazy as Brazilian Carnaval but pretty cool any way.

http://www.dr-tourist.tv/pages/carnaval.html has some videos from Carnaval

www.el-bohio.com has some cool carnaval pics as well.

Mao is highly recommended, less tourists and "safer" then La Vega. Last carnival the diablos got a little rediculous with the bags they hit you with and many people were black & blue for a few days afterwards.

I went to Santiago this year, about 1 million people were there.

I heard that there was a smaller version of Carnival that happens in August. If so, when and where?

I was in STI during Carnaval in february but didn't make it to any of the Carnaval parades etc. Maybe next year. I want to check out a bunch of Carnavals next year if I can. . .

Also for those who go for more then the chicas, there is a great Carnival museum in Santiago.

They have made carnival masks for over 80 years! And the original founder was actually bestowed the title of "Don"!

Yeah traditionally it's the bladder from a pig. But lately they have been using synthetic rubber or blowing them up beyond capacity to make them harder. They tie 2-3 to a rope and go around hitting you with them.

I would love to experience the carnival there, but i wouldn't appreciate the hitting. I don't respond well to that.

side note, DT, I copped me a grande and found ciclon in a bodega in Bed-Stuy, so the mixture is about to pop off.
